The St. Thomas Aquinas College baseball team suffered an East Coast Conference double-header sweep at Molloy College, 8-2 and 5-1. The twin-bill was played at Mitchel Park in Uniondale, NY with the Spartans falling to 12-8 overall and 5-3 in the ECC. Molloy improved to 8-10, 4-4.
Both games were tight affairs, with the opener tied at 2-2 before Molloy opened up with a 6-run 7th inning. In the nightcap, the Lions posted two in the 5th and another in the 7th to pull away from a one-run game.
STAC broke on top quickly in game one, with Kenny Kirshner's one-out triple and Stanley Susana's sac fly plating the game's first run. Molloy scratched out a pair in the 4th off starter Anthony Morris, giving them a lead that would hold up until Joe Boland's game-tying leadoff homer in the 7th.
The bullpen would not do the trick, however, as a pair of STAC relievers were tagged for a 6-run Lions rally - three of which were unearned - giving the hosts the victory. Rich Baerga had a pair of hits and Nick May fell to 1-1 with the loss.
Game two featured a similar start, with the Spartans jumping out to a 1st inning lead. Baerga was hit by a pitch leading off and eventually came in on another Susana sacrifice fly. That would end STAC's scoring for the day, as Molloy pushed across a pair each in the 2nd and 5th innings, and added another in the top of the 7th.
The hitting woes continued as St. Thomas Aquinas scratched out just three hits, with Frank falling to 0-1 in his first decision of the season.
The Spartans return to action on Tuesday, April 1, in a non-conference game against Dominican College at Provident Bank Park, with first pitch slated for 7:00 pm. They return to conference play next weekend with a four-game set against Mercy College, beginning in Dobbs Ferry on Friday.
