Spartan Bats Silenced in 7-2 Loss at Rollins

The St. Thomas Aquinas College baseball team came up short at Rollins College, 7-2, in Winter Park, Florida. The Spartans now stand at 3-3 on their Florida trip, which ends Thursday. Rollins improved to 12-8 with the win.

Both teams exchanged goose eggs through four innings before the hosts broke through with two runs in the fifth inning and four more in the seventh. St. Thomas Aquinas, meanwhile, was held without a hit through six innings by starter Brandon Burgess before finally breaking through in the 7th.

Kenny Kirshner picked up STAC's first hit with a leadoff double, after which Stanley Susana reached on an error, with Kirshner holding at second. Nick Gargan's single loaded the bases and after a Mike Apreda fly out, Derek Hirsch brought in the Spartans' first run with a walk. Deven DelPriore knocked in Susana on a ground out, but with second and third and two down, Juan Adorno popped out to end the threat.

Rollins tacked on another run in the bottom of the 7th to account for the final score as the Spartans were held to just two hits. STAC committed three errors, allowing the Tars to push across four unearned runs. Starter James Sanchez made his first appearance of the season for St. Thomas Aquinas and was the pitcher of record on the losing side.

The Spartans close out their Florida trip on Thursday, March 13, taking on Stonehill College. The teams have met twice during this trip, with each claiming a victory.

Please note - this weekend's games against St. Anselm have been moved to Baseball Heaven in Yaphank, NY. The set will include double-headers both Saturday and Sunday, March 15 and 16, with both scheduled for a noon first pitch.
