Late Rallies Propel STAC Baseball Past Bentley, 12-3

The St. Thomas Aquinas College baseball team won its second straight game, rallying late for a 12-3 victory over Bentley University at Rollins College in Winter Park, Florida. Kenny Kirshner and Rich Baerga had three hits each and CJ Ferriggi drove in three runs in the win as STAC improved to 2-1 on the season while dropping Bentley to 0-5.

STAC pitcher Nick May and Bentley counterpart David Long traded zeroes through the first four innings but each was knocked from the box in the 5th. Bentley struck first in the top half, with RBI singles from Nate Witkowski and Justin Ashworth putting the Falcons up a pair and ending May's day. Nick Cooper escaped further damage and the Spartans went to work in the bottom half.

Nick D'Angelo led off with a single and came around on a Derek Hirsch double, followed by an Omar Cuevas RBI single to quickly tie the score. Kirshner doubled to move Cuevas to third, chasing Long, but the Spartans were far from finished. Ferriggi drove in a pair with a base hit, and Baerga's bunt single later in the frame gave STAC a 5-2 advantage.

Bentley plated an unearned run in the 6th to trim the deficit to two, but St. Thomas Aquinas would pull away in the late innings. Mike Apreda drove in a run while reaching on an error and Stephen Sunday scored on another error in the 7th, staking STAC to a 7-2 lead.

They would pull away with another handful of runs in the eighth, starting with a Ferriggi sac fly, plating Cuevas. Chris Goetz drew a bases-jammed walk to make the tally 9-2, and RBI hits from Baerga and Nick D'Angelo added the exclamation point. Hirsch's sac fly brought in Baerga to close out the scoring, as Cooper earned the win, allowing just one unearned run and one hit in 3.1 relief frames.

The Spartans close out the three game set with Bentley on Tuesday, March 11. They will face Stonehill at 2:00 pm and host school Rollins at 6:00 pm on Wednesday, March 12, before closing out their seven-game southern swing against Stonehill on Thursday, March 13, after which they will return north.

Please note - this weekend's games against St. Anselm have been moved to Baseball Heaven in Yaphank, NY. The set will include double-headers both Saturday and Sunday, March 15 and 16, with both set for a noon first pitch.
