Bentley Strikes Late to Top Spartans in Extra Innings, 5-4

The St. Thomas Aquinas College baseball team fell to Bentley University, 5-4 in 10 innings at Rollins University in Winter Park, Florida. STAC starter Anthony Morris worked seven strong innings but did not figure in the decision as the Spartans dropped to 2-2 overall, while Bentley earned its first win of the season to improve to 1-5.

Morris allowed just a pair of first inning runs in his first collegiate start, but Bentley pushed across a pair of unearned markers in the bottom of the eighth to tie the game before taking the decision in the 10th.

Bently took early advantage of Morris' first collegiate start, with the first four batters recording hits and building a 2-0 lead for the Falcons. After working out of further trouble in the inning, the nearby New City native tossed zeroes across the board, allowing just four hits over his last six innings of work, fanning five and not allowing a walk.

Meanwhile, his teammates wasted little time in answering, tying the game up at 2-2 in the top of the 2nd. Deven DelPriore brought in Omar Cuevas with a ground out, and Rich Baerga followed with an RBI single to draw the Spartans even. They would then grab the lead with solo runs in the 3rd and 4th.

Joe Boland scored on a wild pitch to put STAC on top, and Stanley Susana drew a walk with the bags loaded to make the score 4-2. Bentley was able to escape further damage, however, which became a turning point when they rallied for a pair of unearned runs off reliever Joseph Duconing in the eighth.

Brian Tompkins would come on to escape with a 4-4 tie, but that would last until the 10th when the Falcons pushed across the game-winner. Nate Wiskowski doubled to lead off, and came home when Justin Ashworth matched that two-bagger, making a winner out of reliever Connor Root, who allowed just two hits in four scoreless innings.

The Spartans return to action with a split double-header on Wednesday, March 12, playing Stonehill College at 2:00 before meeting up with Rollins on its home field at 6:00. STAC winds up its Florida swing on Thursday, March 13, facing Stonehill.

Please note - this weekend's games against St. Anselm have been moved to Baseball Heaven in Yaphank, NY. The set will include double-headers both Saturday and Sunday, March 15 and 16, with both scheduled for a noon first pitch.
