ECC Awards: Susana Player of the Year, Dingcong Takes Rookie Honors

The St. Thomas Aquinas College baseball team was well represented in the annual ECC Post-Season awards. Stanley Susana was named Player of the Year and Giovanni Dingcong was Rookie of the Year as six Spartans were recognized.

Susana is completing his record-setting career at St. Thomas Aquinas by being named the conference's top player. The program's all-time leader in hits, Stanley has now been named to the All-Conferece team each of his four seasons, which included the nod as the conference's Rookie of the Year in 2012. He enters his final post-season as the league leader in RBIs with 36.

Dingcong hopes to match his teammate's prowess, being named as the ECC's Rookie-of the-Year as well as a First Team All-Conference selection. His stellar freshman campaign included standing as the league leader in home runs with six, second in RBI (to Susana) with 32, and second in batting average at .364.

Two other Spartans joined the top awards winners on the ECC All-Conference first team, paced by second baseman Joseph Pena, who also merited serious consideration in Rookie of the Year honors. Batting in the leadoff slot throughout his freshman season, Pena led the conference with a .384 batting average and dominated in on base percentage with a .519 mark.

Nick Gargan emerged as one of STAC's hottest hitters down the stretch as the left fielder also garnered First Team honors. Gargan's .337 average placed him fifth in the ECC, and he was second only to Pena in on base percentage with a .438 mark batting second in the Spartan lineup.

A pair of players also earned Second Team kudos, as Matt Kostolos tied for the league lead with six victories in a strong season on the hill, and Brandon Fischer wrapped up his first season at STAC by being recognized at the shortstop position after recording a .317 batting average.

The Spartans will now participate in the 2015 East Coast Conference Tournament in search of their third straight championship title. STAC is making it's eighth straight post-season appearance, tops in the ECC, and opens up against the University of Bridgeport on Thursday at 12:00 noon at Mitchel Field in Uniondale, NY. The double-elimination format sees the Spartans returning to action on Friday, with time and opponent pending Thursday's results.
