Spartans Stumble Late in 8-3 Loss at Felician

The St. Thomas Aquinas College baseball team was unable to hold a 3-2 lead in an eventual 8-3 loss at Felician College. Rich Baerga led the Spartans with three hits but his team fell to 3-4-1 overall, while Felician improved to 6-13.

STAC broke on top in the visiting 2nd when Rich Cesca's single brought in Brandon Fisher, who had drawn a one-out walk. Felician quickly drew even with an unearned run off starter Matt Kostalos in the bottom half and took the lead in the third on a two-out RBI triple from Branden Shaw.

Baerga tied the score with an RBI single in the fifth, and Giovanni Dingcong put STAC on top at 3-2 with a sacrifice fly in the same frame. The Golden Falcons would qucikly answer again to tie the score in the bottom half, and the score remained deadlocked into the home seventh.

John Bednarek would struggle on the mound for STAC but escape allowing a go-ahead single to Jason Polgano. An error to the first batter in the home eighth would open the door for four unearned Falcons runs, pulling away for a victory in their home opener. Bednarek fell to 1-1 with the loss.

The Spartans open East Coast Conference action this weekend with a big four-game set against rival Molloy College. Please note the following schedule changes - due to unplayable field conditions at Provident Bank Park, the entire series will be played at Mitchel Field on Long Island. Friday's scheduled contest has been postponed due to weather, and will now be played as a noon double-header on Sunday, with STAC serving as the home team on the scoreboard for both of those games. Saturday's double-header will be played starting at noon, as scheduled.
