Spartans Power Past Nyack for 10-1 Victory

The St. Thomas Aquinas College baseball team took a 10-1 non-conference victory over Nyack College. Rich Cesca and Greg Dawber drove in three runs each and John Bednarek worked six strong innings for the win as the Spartans won their ninth game in their last 11 overall to improve to 14-8-1, dropping Nyack to 5-20.

After a scoreless first, the Spartans put together a quartet of hits in the second to grab a 3-0 lead. Dawber drove in the game's first run with a single and Nick Gargan brought home a pair with a two-out hit to start the onslaught.

Brandon Fischer stole third and trotted home on a throwing error in the fifh and STAC broke the game open one inning later. A two-out error opened the door and Cesca cleared the bases with a three-run double to open an 8-1 gap.

That was more than enough for Bednarek, who allowed just one run while yielding four hits and fanning five over his six innings of work. Dawber's two-RBI double in the visiting ninth put the finishing touches on STAC's 13-hit attack, which was also aided by Rich Baerga's three hits. Bednarek improved to 2-2 with the win, while five Spartan relievers combined for shutout ball over the last three innings.

The Spartans look to retain their hold on first place in the East Coast Conference with a four-game weekend set against Queens College. The series starts Friday in Flushing, shifts to Provident Bank Park for a noon double-dip on Saturday, and wraps up back in Queens on Sunday.
