Bats Come Alive in Spartans 10-3 Rout over Rollins

The St. Thomas Aquinas College baseball team got into the win column with a 10-3 victory at Rollins College in Winter Park, Florida. STAC pounded out 10 hits in the victory in improving to 1-2 on the season, while Rollins fell to 11-11 overall.

STAC struck in the top of the second inning when Jon McGugan's grounder brought in Derek Hirsch, and Brandon Fischer later scored on a wild pitch. Rollins posted solo runs in the third and fourth against John Bednarek to tie the score, but the visitors took charge in the top of the fifth.

Stanley Susana led off with a walk, stole second, and came around on a pair of wild pitches to put the Spartans ahead to stay. Later that frame, Fischer brought in a run on a fielder's choice, and McGugan's double scored Fischer to make the tally 5-2.

Bednarek yielded after five solid innings of work, allowing just one earned run on four hits, while his teammates broke the game open in the eighth. Giovanni Dingcong's bases-loaded double plated a pair of runs, with Rich Baerga making the score 8-2 with an RBI on an infield hit.

Gargan's RBI grounder closed out a two-run ninth for the Spartans, while reliever Nick May was in control, yielding just a ninth-inning tally and only one hit in his four innings of relief work to earn the save. Seven different Spartans got into the hit column, while Dingcong and McGugan each drove in a pair of runs.

The Spartans return to action tomorrow morning, March 10, facing Bentley University in an 11:00 am start. They will finish their Florida trip with three games against Stonehill - a double-header on Wednesday followed by a single contest on Thursday.
