The St. Thomas Aquinas College baseball team opened the 2015 season with a 3-2 loss at the hands of Bentley University in Winter Park, Florida. Bentley scored three second-inning runs to grab its first victory of the season, improving to 1-6 overall.
Starter Matt Kostolos got into trouble early, yielding four hits, a walk and a hit batter as the Falcons had all the offense they would need for the day. Connor Root held STAC in check, allowing just an unearned run while scattering nine hits in 6.1 innings of work.
Brandon Fischer helped the Spartans rally in the ninth with a leadoff triple, scoring on a Nick Gargan single but that was as close as St. Thomas Aquinas would get. Gargan, Stanley Susana and Giovanni Dingcong posted two hits each for STAC, while Anthony Morris came out of the pen to toss three scoreless frames in relief.
The Spartans will have a chance to draw even with Bentley on Monday, March 9, when the teams square off in a 2:00 pm start. That's part of a day/night double-header, which will see STAC takes on Rollins College with first pitch scheduled for 6:00 pm.
