Spartans Settle for Split with Concordia; Win Opener, 5-2, then Drop Nightcap, 9-7

The St. Thomas Aquinas College baseball team split a twin-bill against Concordia College at Provident Bank Park, rallying for a 5-2 win in the opener before having Concordia turn the tables in an 9-7 win. STAC now stands at 21-10-1 overall, with Concordia at 15-14.

STAC took a lead in game one on a Rich Cesca sac fly in the home fourth, but the Clippers answered with single runs in the fifth and seventh to take a lead of Anthony Morris, who allowed just one earned run in seven innings of work.

That was enough to help his team rally in the last of the seventh, pushing across three unearned runs with the help of three Concordia errors. Joseph Pena and Rich Baerga had RBI hits in the inning, and John Bednarek worked the last two innings for the save.

Morris improved to 4-1 overall with the win, while the save was Bednarek's first. Morris scattered seven hits while striking out seven and walking one.

In game two, the Spartans appeared well on their way to a sweep, holding a 7-2 lead after five innings of the scheduled seven-inning affair. Giovanni Dingcong drove in the first run with a walk and Deven Del Priore added a sac fly in the bottom of the first to give the hosts an advantage.

Concordia plated a pair of starter Nick May in the top of the third, but Dingcong's line drive two-run homer to left in the bottom half put his team back up a pair. Dingcong would add a sac fly followed by a Derek Hirsch two-RBI single in the fifth, and STAC appeared to be in the driver's seat.

Unfortunately, the visitors had other ideas in mind, plating two in the sixth and three unearned tallies in the seventh, with the final run coming on a passed ball with the game potentially down to its final out. The Clippers pushed across two more in the eighth, and the Spartans were unable to answer, seeing their winning streak snapped at four.

Maurizio Devita was tagged with his first loss of the season, while Dingcong's triple, homer and four RBI were not enough for STAC. Del Priore and Brandon Fischer added two hits each for the home squad.

The Spartans are back in action on Tuesday, April 21, returning to Provident Bank Park to host Felician College in a 3:30 pm start. STAC will then be off until Friday, when the first place Spartans host Dowling College in an 11:00 am twin-bill as the start of a big four-game East Coast Conference series.
