Spartans Rebound for Sweep of LIU Post, 9-6 and 6-0

The St. Thomas Aquinas College baseball team came up with an East Coast Conference sweep over LIU Post, 9-6 and 6-0, at Provident Bank Park. Nick May tossed a complete game shutout in the nightcap as the Spartans improved to 12-7-1 overall and 8-3 in conference play, with Post falling to 9-8, 7-4. STAC has now won seven of its last eight games and moved back into first place in the ECC.

A bout of early wildness gave the Pioneers their only lead of the day when STAC starter Michael Gonzalez issued a bases-loaded walk in the second. Nick Gargan's RBI single tied the game in the home third and Jonathan McGugan's two-run single in the fourth spotted the hosts to a 3-1 advantage.

That would become 4-1 in the fifth on Brandon Fischer's run-scoring single, but Gonzalez would tire in the sixth, allowing Post to rally with three runs to tie the score. STAC would answer with three of their own in the bottom half, keyed by a sac fly from Joseph Pena and a Stanley Susana RBI double.

Post would again narrow the gap to 7-6 with a pair in the visiting seventh, but Christian Santo would escape further damage from the bullpen as the offense went back to work. Devon Del Priore's two-run single in the last of the seventh provided all the insurance the Spartans would need as Santo would finish the job on the hill.

Every STAC player hit safely in the 16-hit attack, with seven different Spartans recording two hits each. Maurizio Devita earned the win in relief with Santo grabbing his fourth win of the season.

Game two turned into a tough one for the visitors, as a total of eight Pioneer errors contributed to the home squad's sweep. Three of those errors came in the bottom of the second, when a Santo RBI single led to a 2-0 STAC lead. Another pair of errors would add up to three more Spartan runs and a comfortable 5-0 cushion, closing out the scoring on a Fischer RBI hit in the home fifth.

Starter Nick May had all the run support he would need, hitting his spots all day in scattering four Post hits over the seven-inning complete game, striking out six and walking two. May's impressive effort lifted his season record to 3-1, with Pena and Rich Cesca chipping in two hits apiece.

After enjoying Easter Sunday off, the teams will complete the four-game weekend set back on Long Island on Monday, April 6. The Spartans return to Provident Bank Park for a non-conference battle with Adelphi University on Tuesday, April 7.
