The St. Thomas Aquinas College baseball team survived a late threat in a 6-3 victory over Nyack College at Dutchess Stadium. Brandon Fisher scored three runs for the Spartans who improved to 6-6-1 with the win, while dropping Nyack to 3-14 overall.

STAC jumped in front on single runs in each of the first two innings, with Fischer trotting home via an error in the first and Joseph Pena's RBI single putting the hosts up a pair. Nyack got on the board with an unearned run in the top of the fourth, the only tally that Spartan starter Mike Gonzalez would yield in five strong innings of work.

Rich Cesca came up with a big two-RBI double in the last of the fifth to make the score 4-1, which proved big when the Warriors followed with two in the sixth of reliever Matt Petro, to draw to within 4-3. Petro would settle down, however, keeping the game there until his team could add some insurance in the home eighth.

Fischer would come through with a big two-out triple, bringing in Rich Baerga from second, and Stanley Susana followed with an RBI double in the gap. Nyack would string together three singles to load the bases in the top of the ninth, but Petro would close the deal for his first save, improving Gonzalez to 1-1 on the campaign. Pena, Fischer, and Susana each had two hits in the 10-hit Spartan offense.

The Spartans return to action on Friday, March 27, to start a four-game East Coast Conference set against Mercy College. Friday's game, originally scheduled for Provident Bank Park, will be played at Mercy College with STAC batting as the home team - first pitch is set for 3:30 pm.
