Gargan, Kostolos Power STAC to 10-2 Win Over Pace

The St. Thomas Aquinas College Spartans scored 10 unanswered runs in a 10-2 victory over Pace University at Provident Bank Park. Nick Gargan had four hits while Matt Kostolos fanned 10 in the win as the Spartans have won three straight and 15 of 18 overall to improve to 20-9-1, with Pace dropping to 15-11.

Pace grabbed a two-run lead in the very opening frame, but it could have been worse. Leadoff hitter Andrew Coffey, appered to double into the corner off starter Nick May, but was ruled out for missing first on an appeal. The Setters still added two hits to push across a pair in the inning, but that was to be the sum total of their offense.

Joseph Pena led off the home first with a triple and scored on a Gargan double to make the score 2-1 after one. Matt Kostolos relieved May with two out and a man on third in the top of the second and recorded his first strikeout to escape further trouble, and his teammates were quick to come through.

Giovanni Dingcong crushed a two-run homer to right-center in the bottom half, putting STAC ahead to stay. Deven Del Priore doubled and scored on Greg Dawber sac fly to make the score 4-2 after two frames.

Kostolos was firmly in charge thereafter, blanking Pace while STAC blew the game open with a four-run fifth. Gargan and Rich Cesca, Jr., keyed the five hit uprising with RBI doubles in the inning as the Spartans opened an 8-2 cushion. Gargan's run-scoring double - his third of the game - one inning later put the tally at 9-2, with Del Priore's infield hit in the seventh bringing home the final marker.

Cesca added three hits and a pair of doubles of his own in the 15-hit attack, with Pena scoring three times. Kostolos was dominant, allowing just two hits over 5.2 innings for the win to improve to 5-2 on the season.

The Spartans return to action on Saturday, April 18, starting a four-game home and home series at Concordia. The teams will play twin bills both days this weekend starting at noon, with the set wrapping up with a Sunday double at Provident Bank Park.
