Morris Twirls Gem as 1-Hitter Lifts STAC over Clarion, 2-0

The St. Thomas Aquinas College baseball team won its fourth straight game, a 2-0 triumph over Clarion University in Wilson, NC. Anthony Morris went the distance for the Spartans, allowing just one hit as STAC improved to 5-1 on the season, with Clarion falling to 0-2.

Morris earned his first win of the campaign in his second start, as the junior has yet to allow an earned run thus far. The right-hander allowed just one unearned run in last weekend's loss to West Chester University, and has now scattered just four hits over his 15.0 innings of work.

Most of the limited action came in the first inning, as there was no suspense over the no-hit bid. Mitch Holmberg led off the game for Clarion with a single, and that was the extent of the offense Morris would allow, yielding just one walk and hitting one batter the rest of the way.

STAC provided the only runs of the day in the home 1st, starting with Joe Pena's walk. He would come around on a Jesse Nakashian single, and Giovanni Dingcong eventually singled Nakashian home, thus drawing the scoring to a close.

Morris would do the rest, fanning eight batters in going the distance. retiring 18 consecutive batters at one point. Nakashian had half of the Spartan offense, with three of the team's six hits.

After a brief break, the Spartans return to action for an afternoon contest against Fairmont State University, with first pitch set for 2:30 pm. The weekend in North Carolina finishes on Sunday, March 6, with a rematch against West Virginia State beginning at noon. STAC defeated WVSU on Friday by a 4-1 count.
