The St. Thomas Aquinas College baseball team has been awarded the #3 seed in the East Region for the 2017 NCAA Division II Baseball Tournament. The Spartans will open play at 11:00 am on Thursday, May 18, against #6 Southern Connecticut State at Southern New Hampshire University.
St. Thomas Aquinas, ranked #21 in the nation in last week's NCBWA poll, enters the field of 56 teams with a 38-15 record, making their fifth straight appearance in NCAA Tournament competition. The East Coast Conference Regular-Season Champions are 9-9 overall in NCAA tourney action, and had won 11 straight games before dropping their final two contests in the ECC Tournament on Friday.
Southern Connecticut, ranked #4 in last week's regional poll, slipped to the #6 seed, bringing their 27-14-1 mark into first-round action against the Spartans. The Owls finished the regular season with a 14-4 conference mark before suffering a first-round elimination at the hands of Pace University in the Northeast-10 Tournament.
STAC opens the Regional with Game One on Thursday against SCSU at 11:00 am. In other first round action, #2 University of New Haven meets #7 Dominican College in Game Two at 3:00 pm, while #4 LIU Post squares off with #5 Felician University in Game Three starting at 7:00 pm. As top seed, SNHU earns a first-round bye in the seven-team double-elimination regional, and will play the winner of Thursday's game between LIU Post and Felician.
If the Spartans win on Thursday, they proceed in the Winner's Bracket to tournament Game Six on Friday at 7:00 pm, facing the winner of Game Two (New Haven vs. Dominican). If STAC loses on Thursday, they will proceed in the Loser's Bracket into Game Four at 11:00 am Friday, taking on the loser of Game Two (New Haven vs. Dominican) in an elimination game.
