The St. Thomas Aquinas College baseball team fell to a 5-2 defeat in a non-conference contest at Adelphi University on Tuesday Afternoon. The Spartans fell to 2-1 on the season, while Adelphi was participating in its season opener.

STAC won its first two games of the season at last weekend's Dinwiddie Challenge in Virginia, however a double-header rainout on Saturday led to the addition of Tuesday's contest on Long Island.

Pitching was dominant early, with Adelphi's TJ Santiago locking zeroes with Spartans starter Frankie Moscatiello. That held until the home fourth, when Michael Stack doubled in the game's first two runs. The Panthers added an unearned run in the sixth, while STAC was unable to solve Santiago, who yielded just two hits while striking out nine over seven scoreless innings.

Adelphi added a pair of insurance runs off the Spartan bullpen in the seventh, and Mike Morgan broke up the shutout in the top of the eighth with his second homer of the young season. STAC proceeded to load the bases with one out off reliever Michael Demarest, bringing the tying run to the plate. 

Andrew Sesto came on for the Panthers, and Greg Dawber brought in a run with a fielder's choice grounder, but that was as close as the visitors were to come, with Deven Del Priore grounding out to end the inning, after which the contest was called due to darkness.

The Spartans return to the road this weekend, playing a trio of games in Thomasville, North Carolina. On Saturday, they face LeMoyne and Bloomfield, before wrapping up against Seton Hill on Sunday.
