Shkreljas Boost STAC to 6-5 ECC Victory at Molloy

The St. Thomas Aquinas College baseball team won its third straight, a 6-5 East Coast Conference decision over Molloy College, on Wednesday. Twins Mark and Anthony Shkrelja combined for five hits and Chad Sinko earned the win in relief as the Spartans improved to 12-9 overall and 3-2 in conference play, dropping Molloy to 6-14, 1-1.

Joey Pena dealt the decisive blow as his 7th inning RBI triple snapped a 3-3 tie, giving STAC a lead it would not relinquish after rallying from an early 2-0 deficit.

Molloy jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead in the home 1st on Angelo Navetta's two-run shot, but Giovanni Dingcong answered with a leadoff shot in the next frame and Mike Morgan doubled and came in to score on a Joe Boland grounder to tie the score. The Lions jumped back on top with a solo marker in the 3rd, and Anthony Shkrelja's double drove in brother mark to tie the contest at 3-3 in the 6th.

STAC took the lead for the first time in the 7th when Chris Ruiz was hit by a pitch and scored on Pena's triple, with Pena scoring an insurance run on a wild pitch. Mark Shkrelja came through with what proved to be a big RBI single in the 9th, as Navetto's second homer of the game, a two-run shot with two out, drew Molloy closer but the Spartans would hold on for the win.

Anthony Morris battled through five innings in the start, with Chad Sinko working 3.1 solid relief frames to pick up the win. Mark Shkrelja led the 12-hit attack with a trio, while starter Anthony Catinella took the loss for the hosts.

The Spartans return to ECC play this weekend with a four-game series against Queens College. On Friday, STAC travels to Flushing before opening their home schedule with a noon twin-bill at Palisades Credit Union Park on Saturday. The series wraps up back in Queens with a single game on Sunday.
