Five-Run First, Stellar Pitching Lead Spartans to 5-0 Victory over Kutztown

The St. Thomas Aquinas College baseball team won its fourth straight game, a 5-0 non-conference victory over Kutztown University at Palisades Credit Union Park. The Spartans, ranked #6 in the East Region in this week's National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) poll, have now won seven of eight overall to improve to 16-10, with Kutztown falling to 11-14.

All of the game's scoring came in the home 1st inning, as STAC pushed across all five runs on just a pair of timely hits. Kutztown starter Jeremy Hileman faced just three batters, walking the bases loaded before yielding to reliever David Brown. Anthony Shkrelja, serving double-duty as the pitcher-designated hitter, helped his cause with a two run single to put the Spartans on top.

After an infield error made the score 3-0, Mike Morgan came through with another two-run single, bringing home more than enough runs for a quartet of Spartan hurlers, who combined to hold the visitors to just five hits on the night.

Shkrelja earned his first win with five strong innings, allowing just one hit while fanning seven. Chris Pennell came on to strike out five in two innings of work, while Brian Helft and George Navadel worked a scoreless frame each, with the Spartans combining to strike out 15 opposing batters on the night.

In a schedule change - the Spartans return to action on Friday, traveling to face Adelphi in a game that was moved from it's original Thursday slot due to impending inclement weather. STAC then returns to East Coast Conference play for a single game at Mercy at noon Saturday, and hosts St. Anselm for a non-conference double-dip on Sunday at 1pm at PCU Park.
