The St. Thomas Aquinas College baseball team fell to a 2-1 defeat in an East Coast Conference contest at Palisades Credit Union Park. The Spartans saw their win streak snapped at six games, falling to 27-13 overall and 11-5 in ECC play, with Queens improving to 14-18, 8-12.

STAC has now won 17 of its last 21 games overall, but two of those setbacks were to Queens starter Joe Broderick, who tossed a complete game to earn the victory. The Knights claimed a first inning run off starter Anthony Shkrelja, who settled in and was strong through six innings of work.

Giovanni Dingcong scored the tying run in the fourth, stealing third base and coming home on a throwing error, to tie the score at 1-1, where it would stay until the top of the 9th.

A fielding error opened the door in that frame, and with runners at second and third and one out, a walk to pinch hitter Tom Parrish was mishandled for a passed ball, bringing Andrew Navarez home with what proved to be the winning run. Broderick scattered eight hits in improving to 4-5 on the season, with Scott Hannon taking the hard-luck loss on the unearned run to drop to 0-2.

The Spartans return to conference action this weekend for a big four-game set against rival Molloy College. The series starts with a Friday evening double-header at Palisades Credit Union Park, with first pitch set for 3:30 pm, before shifting to Long Island for a Saturday noon twin-bill at Mitchell Park.
