Spartan Baseball Well-Represented with All-Region Honors, Dingcong Named to First Team

On Monday, both the Division II Conference Commissioners Association and the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association released their All-East Region selections for the 2018 season. In addition, ABCA/Rawlings recently released their All Region selections as well.

St. Thomas Aquinas College was well represented, as Giovanni Dingcong (D2CCA, NCBWA & ABCA) and Joseph Pena (ACBA) took home First Team honors, while Angelo Baez (D2CCA & NCBWA), Frankie Moscatiello (D2CCA, NCBWA & ABCA), Tyler Patane (D2CCA) and Pena (NCBWA) were each named to the Second Team. Anthony Shkrelja (NCBWA) was selected as Honorable Mention.

Dingcong (Sr./OF/Daly City, Calif.) wraps up his stellar 4-year career with a .356 batting average (68-for-191), 15 homers, 55 RBI and 48 runs scored in 2018. Giovanni also swiped 21 bases and was one of only two Spartans (Joey Pena) to play in all 54 games for St. Thomas Aquinas this season.

Baez (So./P & IF/Bronx, N.Y.) became the Spartan closer following the departure of George Navadel last season due to graduation. Angelo went 4-2 in 20 appearances with a 2.81 ERA, also recording 11 saves. In 41.2 innings of work, Baez struck out 47 opposing batters, while only walking 13.

Moscatiello (Sr./P/Rocky Point, N.Y.) closed out his spectacular collegiate career going 9-3 in 15 appearances for St. Thomas Aquinas in 2018. Frankie recorded a 2.69 ERA with 78 strike outs, and became the Spartans 1-2 punch on the mound, along with fellow teammate Chris Cepeda in the starting rotation.

Patane (Jr./P & DH/Lake Grove, N.Y.) became a double threat to opponents in 2018. At the plate, Tyler hit .320 with 3 home runs, 18 RBI and 12 runs scored in 40 games. While on the mound in 13 appearances, he went 3-1 with a 3.83 ERA and struck out 53 opponents, becoming a key arm in the Spartans' postseason run.

Pena (Sr./IF/Brooklyn, N.Y.) concludes an outstanding 4-year career with the Spartans, hitting .366 with 37 RBI and 50 runs scored this season. Joey also had 26 extra base hits and stole 37 bases, while playing all 54 contests on the STAC schedule.

Shkrelja (Sr./IF & P/Bedford Hills, N.Y.) finished his 2-year STAC career posting a .290 batting average in 2018, with 10 homers, 33 RBI and 33 runs scored in 52 games for the Spartans. Anthony stole 17 bases and also went 1-1 in three appearances on the mound,
