Win Streak Extended to 8 as Spartans Complete Sweep of NYIT, 11-2

The St. Thomas Aquinas College baseball team completed a four-game sweep over New York Institute of Technology with an 11-2 East Coast Conference victory at Palisades Credit Union Park. The Spartans have now won eight straight games overall to improve to 21-7 on thee season and 7-1 in ECC play, with NYIT dropping to 5-16-1, 2-10.

For the third straight game in two days, St. Thomas Aquinas jumped on top in the opening inning and never looked back. After freshman Jason Salva kept the visitors off the board in the first, STAC batted around in the bottom half, roaring to a 5-0 lead. The Spartans loaded the bases with none out against NYIT starter Chris Nappi and back-to-back two-RBI singles by Michael Morgan and Mark Shkrelja combined with a sac fly by Bobby Morse to open scoring.

Solo runs in each of the next two innings expanded the lead before the Bears scored their only runs of the day, pushing across a pair in the fifth to cut the margin to 7-2. STAC responded quickly with three in the home half, as Shkrelja added another run-scoring hit to make the margin 10-2. Shkrelja completed a perfect 3-for-3 afternoon by driving in his fourth run of the day in the seventh, and Salva gave way after six solid innings of work before turning the ball over to the bullpen and a scoreless inning each for Peter Romano, John Rodriguez, and Raymon Sarza.

Cris Ruiz added two hits and Salva improved to 3-1 with the win, with Nappi slipping to 0-3 with the loss. STAC was dominant in the four-game series sweep - the first meetings ever between the two programs - outscoring NYIT by a combined 38-5 tally.

The Spartans return to action on Tuesday, April 10, for a 3:30 pm start against nearby rival Dominican College at Palisades Credit Union Park. They then resume ECC play with a four-game weekend series against the University of Bridgeport, with road games Friday and Sunday wrapped around a home twin-bill on Saturday with a 10:00 am start.
