Spartan Baseball Falls to Walsh University, 4-1

Spartan Baseball Falls to Walsh University, 4-1

The St. Thomas Aquinas College Baseball team fell to Walsh University, 4-1 at the USA Baseball Training Complex in Cary, NC on Sunday.

The teams played three scoreless innings, before STAC jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of fourth inning. However, Walsh would respond and score four runs over the last five innings to take the victory.

Brian Donnelly delivered a two-hit game for the Spartans, going 2-for-3 on the day with a walk. Unfortunately, the Cavaliers would keep the rest maroon and gold lineup in check, as starting pitcher Brent Alazaus would pitch a complete game and fan 10 STAC batters to pick up his second win (2-0) of the season.

STAC (4-5) returns to the field for a doubleheader on Monday, March 9th. St. Thomas Aquinas first takes on Franklin Pierce University at 11am, before facing Fairmont State University at 3pm.

HIGHLIGHTS AND NOTES:

  • STAC jumped out to a 1-0 lead, highlighted by a double steal of second and third base in the top of the 4th inning by Brian Donnelly and Anthony Maisano, which also caused an error by the Walsh third baseman Avery Janning and allowed Maisano to come home.
  • Walsh was held scoreless until the bottom of the 5th, when a Jarrett Lyon two-out single, followed by a Chad Jones RBI double to center field would score Lyon to tie things a 1-1.
  • The Cavaliers would take a 2-1 lead in the very next inning, as first Brenden Spaulding would double to left field, then Avery Janning would also double to left, bringing Spaulding home.
  • Walsh would extend the lead to 4-1 in the eighth on the strength of a Jarrett Lyon 2-RBI single to center field, scoring both Avery Janning and Cam Kaiser.
  • Cavaliers starter Brent Alazaus went the distance, only giving up 5 hits and run, while walking one and striking out 10.
  • Aaron Dona was charged with the loss for the Spartans (0-1), pitching 6 innings and surrendering 2 runs on 5 hits, while walking 3 and striking out 5.
