The St. Thomas Aquinas College Baseball team swept a pair of contests from D'Youville College, 15-3 and 2-1 (Final 10-innings) on Saturday afternoon at Gowanda High School in Gowanda, NY. The Spartans improve to 22-3 overall, with a 16-3 ECC mark, while D'Youville falls to 2-24, 0-20.
Leading the STAC offense in the twin bill were Danny Di Marzo, who went 3-for-7, with 4 RBI and a run scored and Andrew Guerra, who had two hits, including a double, with 4 RBI and 2 runs scored. Other key contributors on the day were; Greg DiGiaro (3-for-7, 2 runs scored), Joe Scamardella (2-for-6, 2 RBI, 2 runs scored), Matt Johnson (2-for-6, double, RBI, 2 runs scored) and Anthony Maisano (3 hits, triple, 2 RBI, 2 runs scored).
Alex Mack got the start for the Spartans in game one and tossed six innings, giving up three runs (2 earned) on four hits, while walking one and striking out eight to improve to 6-0 on the season. Relievers Mateo Reyes, Orin Winslow and Ryan Lutz combined to throw three scoreless innings to close things out, surrendering only a hit and striking out six.
Game two starter Aaron Dona had a most impressive outing for the maroon and gold, and despite picking up the no-decision, Dona only allowed three hits and a run (1 earned), while walking two and fanning 11 over five innings. Justin Baeyens and Dylan Leahy were then called upon by Head Coach Jon Garvey to keep the game in check, with a chance to steal another win from the Saints. The duo combined to give up two hits and three walks, while k-ing 12 in five innings of work, with Leahy taking the victory.
