Spartans Close Regular Season Sweeping Sunday Twin Bill From Bridgeport, 3-1 & 6-0

Bridgeport, Conn. - The St. Thomas Aquinas College Baseball team closed its 2022 regular season schedule, sweeping a Mother's Day doubleheader from the University of Bridgeport by the scores of 3-1 and 6-0 on Sunday afternoon at the Seaside Park Baseball Complex. 

STAC improves to 22-21 overall and 14-7 in ECC play, while Bridgeport falls to 19-28 and 8-13.

How it Happened - Game One

  • Bridgeport opened the scoring in the second inning with an RBI ground out to shortstop to take a 1-0 lead.
  • Andrew Jemison's 2-RBI double to left-center field scored both Sean Lynch and David Potenza to give STAC a 2-1 advantage in the fifth.
  • The Spartans picked up an insurance run in the ninth on a David Potenza RBI single to left-center field, scoring Sean Lynch to make it 3-1.
  • John Archer got the start for St. Thomas Aquinas, hurling five solid innings to pick up his fifth win of the season (5-5). Archer allowed two hits and a run, while walking one and striking out a pair of Purple Knights hitters.
  • Relievers Matthew Polemeni, Bryan Krolikowski and Justin Baeyens combined to throw four shutout innings out of the bullpen. The trio surrendered only two hits, while fanning one. 
  • Justin Baeyens earned his seventh save of the year, pitching a perfect ninth inning, while K-ing one.

How it Happened - Game Two

  • STAC took a 1-0 advantage in the first inning courtesy of a Matthew Johnson RBI triple to center field, scoring Andrew Jemison.
  • Danny Di Marzo's RBI single to right field in the third, allowed Jemison to score again to double the Spartan lead at 2-0.
  • Another Di Marzo RBI single, this time to left field in the fifth inning, brought Matthew Johnson home, making it 3-0.
  • A bases loaded hit by pitch to Arthur Xanthos, scored Di Marzo to give the Spartans a commanding 4-0 advantage in the fifth.
  • St. Thomas Aquinas closed the scoring in the sixth, as Andrew Jemison scored on a wild pitch, combined with an error by the Bridgeport catcher, allowing David Potenza to score a second run to make it 6-0.
  • Mark Barillas got the ball in game two for STAC and threw four outstanding innings to pick up the win in the seven-inning contest. Barillas allowed three hits and no runs, while walking one and fanning three.
  • TJ Gregory, Andrew Alameda, Orin Winslow and Aidan O'Connor combined to hurl three innings in relief. The four pitchers only allowed two hits and two walks while mowing down three UB batters.

Up Next

STAC will now head to the ECC Baseball Tournament, which begins on Thursday, May 12 at Mitchel Field on Long Island. The Spartans opponent and start time for Thursday will be announced later this coming week.
