Spartan Bats Catch Fire, as STAC Takes Two from D'Youville

Pomona, N.Y. - The St. Thomas Aquinas College Baseball team took both ends of an ECC doubleheader against D'Youville University on Friday at Clover Stadium. STAC posted 12-4 and 7-3 victories over the visiting Saints.

How it Happened - Game One

  • D'Youville took a 1-0 lead in the second inning on a home run.
  • An Andrew Jemison RBI single, scored Nick O'Connor to tie the game at 1-1 in the third.
  • STAC expanded its lead to 4-1 in the fourth inning via a 2-RBI double by Matthew Johnson, scoring both Kyle Lagrutta and Andrew Jemison. Then Eric Volpi picked up an RBI single with Johnson coming to the plate.
  • The visitors tied the game in the sixth on a 2-RBI triple and a Spartan error.
  • St. Thomas Aquinas blew the game open in the eighth on four singles (Andrew Guerra, Sean Lynch, Kyle Lagrutta and Nick O'Connor), which allowed David Potenza, Danny Di Marzo, Guerra, Lynch, Gregory DiGiaro and TJ Gregory to all score. In addition, Potenza's RBI sacrifice fly brought O'Connor to the plate and finally Di Marzo's double gave STAC a run courtesy of Andrew Jemison to give the Spartans a 12-4 advantage.
  • Aaron Dona got the start for STAC in the opener and picked up a no-decision, pitching seven innings and allowing six hits and four runs (three earned), while fanning 12.
  • Aidan O'Connor, Yanni Orfanidis and Andrew Alameda combined to throw two scoreless innings, only allowing a hit and a pair of walks. Orfanidis earned his second win of the season, while hurling 0.2 of an inning and K-ing two.

How it Happened - Game Two

  • In the night cap, D'Youville jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the fourth inning on another home run.
  • St. Thomas Aquinas posted six runs in the bottom of the stanza. First, Kyle Lagrutta and Billy Minett made the easy trip to the plate via wild pitches, before singles by Matthew Johnson, Gregory DiGiaro, and Danny Di Marzo scored Christopher Conti, Andrew Jemison and Johnson. Finally Di Giaro made his way home on a fielding error to give the hosts an instant 6-2 advantage.
  • A fielder's choice, combined with a throwing error, allowed the Saints to get one final run in the seventh to make it 7-3.
  • Mark Barillas (2-0) took the mound for the Spartans in game two and went six innings, while allowing five hits and three runs (two earned). He also walked one and struckout eight to earn the victory.
  • Justin Baeyens came on in relief in the seventh and slammed the door shut on D'Youville's rally hopes with a pair of strikeouts and force out at the plate.
