Spartans Fall to D'Youville 8-4 in Series Finale

Pomona, N.Y. - The St. Thomas Aquinas College Baseball team could not complete the three-game sweep over D'Youville University, falling to the visiting Saints, 8-4 on Saturday afternoon at Clover Stadium.

STAC slips to 12-15 overall and 6-3 in the ECC, while D'Youville improves to 8-15 and 2-7 in conference play.

How it Happened

  • D'Youville took a 2-0 lead in the first inning on an Ethan Hammond 2-RBI double, scoring both Craig Oliver and Alex Dzimian.
  • Andrew Guerra got STAC on the scoreboard in the fourth on an RBI single, which brought Matthew Johnson to the plate to make it 2-1.
  • In the fifth inning, Andrew Jemison's RBI single, allowed Kyle Lagrutta to come home, tying the game at 2-2.
  • STAC took its first lead of the game, 3-2, in the sixth via and RBI sacrifice fly to centerfield, scoring Gregory DiGiaro.
  • A 2-RBI double by Jeremy Glinskiin the eighth gave the visiting Saints back the lead, as George Farid and Ethan Hammond both came around to score, making it 4-3 D'Youville.
  • The Saint extended their lead in the ninth on a pair of singles by George Farid and Ethan Hammond, along with Alec Boucher's sac-fly to left field, to hold a 8-3 advantage.
  • St. Thomas Aquinas attempted a rally in the bottom of the frame, as Andrew Jemison picked up a one-out RBI double, scoring pinch runner Aaron Dona to close the gap on the scoreboard to 8-4.
  • However, D'Youville would avoid the series sweep by getting a flyout and a pop up to close out the game.

  • Andrew Guerra went 3-for-4 at the plate, with an RBI
  • Andrew Jemison (2-5, 2 RBI), Sean Lynch (1-3, RBI) and Kyle Lagrutta (2-4, Run) each picked up doubles on the afternoon, with Lagrutta getting two-two base knocks.
  • John Archer (L, 3-4) got the start for STAC and pitched seven innings, while surrendering six hits and four runs (two earned). He also walked two and struck out six.
  • Yanni Orfanidis, Bryan Krolikowski and Justin Baeyens all saw action in relief for the Spartans, combining to hurl two innings, giving up six hits and four runs (three earned), while fanning two.
