Spartans Rally for Walk-Off Win Over Dominican in Extras

Pomona, N.Y. - The St. Thomas Aquinas College Baseball team rallied to push across two runs in the seventh, forcing extra innings, where Sean Lynch stroked a game-winning RBI double to give the Spartans a dramatic 7-6 victory over crosstown rivals Dominican College on Tuesday evening at Clover Stadium.

STAC moves to 16-20 on the season, while Dominican drops to 14-27.

How it Happened

  • STAC opened the scoring with a Gregory DiGiaro RBI single through the right side in the first inning, scoring Matthew Johnson, to make it 1-0.
  • The Spartans extended their lead by three in the second on the strength of a David Potenza RBI single to right-center field, with Kyle Lagrutta coming to the plate. Then, an Andrew Jemison 2-RBI single, also to right-center field, brought both Eric Volpi and Potenza around to score to give the maroon and gold a 4-0 advantage.
  • Dominican put together a six-run sixth inning, with a 3-RBI double, RBI single and a 2-RBI double, all to center field, to take a 6-4 lead.
  • St. Thomas Aquinas battled back to tie the game at 6-6 in the bottom of the seventh inning, courtesy of an Eric Volpi sac-fly to center field, scoring Sean Lynch, followed by a David Potenza RBI single and an error, which brought Andrew Guerra to the plate.
  • The hero of the day would be Sean Lynch, who smacked a double to center field in the 10th inning, scoring Matthew Johnson to give STAC a thrilling 7-6 come-from-behind victory.

  • Mateo Reyes, Yanni Orfanidis and Bryan Krolikowski combined to hurl five innings out of the bullpen for STAC. Krolikowski picked up the win, his first of the season (1-1), on the strength of four perfect innings, while K'ing four.
