STAC Baseball Suffers 9-8 Extra Innings Defeat Versus New Haven

Cary, N.C. -  The St. Thomas Aquinas College Baseball team wrapped up its four-game trip to the USA Baseball National Training Complex, falling 9-8 in extra innings to the University of New Haven on Sunday.

STAC drops to 3-6, while New Haven moves to 5-3 on the season.

How it Happened

  • St. Thomas Aquinas picked up three first inning runs on the strength of a Gregory DiGiaro 2 RBI single to right field, scoring Nick O'Connor and Andrew Jemison. Kyle Lagrutta would then come to the plate via a wild pitch.
  • New Haven would answer with two runs of their own in the bottom of the frame, as an Andrew Bianco homer to left and a Cole Maucere RBI triple to center field, scoring Robert Taylor would bring the Chargers within one at 3-2.
  • A second inning wild pitch scored Andrew Jemison, followed by a Danny Di Marzo RBI single to left, with Kyle Lagrutta reaching the plate gave STAC a three-run advantage, 5-2.
  • In the fourth, a Dylan Chiaro line out to center field, scored Robert Taylor and Hunter Boag's RBI single to right, scoring Cole Maucere would close the gap on the scoreboard once again, with the Spartans now only leading 5-4.
  • Gregory DiGiaro smashed a homer to left field in the fifth to give STAC a two-run cushion, 6-4.
  • New Haven would get back to within one (6-5) in the sixth a Hunter Boag RBI groundout, scoring teammate Josh Lester.
  • An Andrew Cain RBI single to center field in the eighth inning tied the game when Cole Maucere reached home for the Chargers.
  • Greg DiGiaro would put STAC back on top by two (8-6) on a two-run homer to right field in the top of the ninth.
  • A Cole Maucere RBI single to right, followed by a Aaron Soucy single to left, which scored Noah Budzik then Brett Reedy, tied the game at eight all in the ninth and forced extra innings.
  • New Haven would walk it off in the bottom of the tenth, as Noah Budzik struck a single to left field, with Hunter Boag coming around to score the winning run.

Top STAC Performances

  • Gregory DiGiaro went 3-for-5, with two home runs, five RBI and a two runs scored.
  • Andrew Jemison picked up two hits in four at-bats for STAC. He also drew two walks.
  • Bryan Krolikowski (no-decision) got the start for STAC and gave up six hits and four runs over four innings pitched.
  • Relievers Yanni Orfanidis, Justin Baeyens and James Reilly combined to hurl five and two thirds innings, surrendering nine hits and five runs, while walking three and fanning five. Reilly (1-1) took the hard-luck defeat in extra innings.
