Spartans Comeback Bid Spoiled By Southern New Hampshire, 10-6

Pomona, N.Y. - The St. Thomas Aquinas College Baseball team attempted a late inning rally for the second straight day, only this time coming up short against Southern New Hampshire University, 10-6 on Wednesday afternoon at Clover Stadium.

STAC drops to 16-21 on the season, while SNHU improves to 30-7.

How it Happened

  • Southern New Hampshire jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the third inning on a pair of solo home runs.
  • The Spartans got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the frame via a balk call that brought Christopher Conti to the plate, making it 2-1.
  • In the fourth, RBI doubles to left field and right-center field, along with a RBI sac-fly increased the Penmen lead to 6-1.
  • David Potenza's solo shot to right field in the bottom of the fourth, cut the STAC deficit to four, at 6-2.
  • SNHU scored twice more in the seventh on a 2-RBI single to make it 8-2.
  • A Christopher Conti homer to right field brought the Spartans within five at 8-3 in the bottom of the seventh inning.
  • Billy Minett followed by reaching first base on a fielding error by the third baseman, scoring Eric Volpi. Then David Potenza reached first on a throwing error by the shortstop, with Kyle Lagrutta and Andrew Guerra both reaching the plate to make it 8-6.
  • With STAC knocking on the door with a second comeback attempt in as many days, So. New Hampshire plated insurance runs in the eighth and ninth innings, courtesy of a RBI single to left field and an RBI triple to center field, giving the Penmen a 10-6 victory. The margin would hold true through the Spartans' halves of the final two innings in the contest.
