Baseball Wraps Up Florida Spring Break Tour with 9-7 Loss to Caldwell

Lake Worth, Fla. - The St. Thomas Aquinas College Baseball team wrapped up its 2022 Florida Spring Break tour, falling to Caldwell University, 9-7 on Thursday at the Santaluces Complex.

STAC returns to New York with a 5-11 overall record, following today's tilt. Meanwhile, Caldwell improves to 5-3 on the season.

How it Happened

  • Caldwell exploded for four first-inning runs, as a Jalen March triple got things started for the Cougars, bringing home Frank Lehmann to make it 1-0.
  • March would then get to trot to the plate himself on a passed ball to double the lead at 2-0.
  • A Noah Putney RBI double, scored teammate Kyle Richards and extended the Caldwell lead to 3-0.
  • The final run of the frame came courtesy of a Liam Lombardi RBI single, scoring Putney to make it 4-0.
  • Christopher Conti got the Spartans on the scoreboard in the top of the second, as an RBI sacrifice fly allowed Danny Di Marzo to come home, cutting the deficit to three at 4-1.
  • Another four-run inning for the Cougars, this time in the third inning, started with a Liam Lombardi single, scoring Kyle Richards, followed by a Liam James 2-RBI single with Lombardi and Santo Anzalone coming home to make it 7-1.
  • Michael Lazzaro's sacrifice fly, brought Liam James to the plate, pushing the Caldwell lead on the scoreboard to 8-1.
  • St. Thomas Aquinas posted runs in the middle innings, as Christopher Conti stroked a fourth-inning 2-RBI triple, scoring Danny Di Marzo and Andrew Guerra, and making it 8-3.
  • A Matthew Johnson RBI double, brought Conti around to score in the fourth, before a Danny Di Marzo single in the fifth scored C.J. Cumbo to make it 8-5.
  • Cumbo had a chance to return the favor and drive in runs himself in the sixth, smacking a single, which plated Conti to make it just a two-run Caldwell Game, 8-6.
  • The Cougars added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth, as Jalen March doubled to bring Frank Lehmann to the plate and extend the Caldwell lead to 9-6.
  • In the eighth, C.J. Cumbo lined out to center field on a sacrifice fly, scoring Christopher Conti to cut the deficit back to two at 9-7. However, this would be all of the offense that STAC could muster and Caldwell closed things out to take the victory.
