STAC Baseball Takes Series from Staten Island with Road Doubleheader Sweep

Staten Island, N.Y. - The St. Thomas Aquinas College Baseball closed out its four-game series with the College of Staten Island on Sunday, rallying to sweep both ends of a road doubleheader at the CSI Baseball Complex, 12-9 and 6-2, to take three-of-four contests from the Dolphins. 

STAC improves to 13-16 overall and 4-3 in ECC play, while CSI falls to 11-16 and 6-6.

HOW IT HAPPENED - GAME ONE:

Top 1st Inning: Kyle DeCresce popped up to second base, with C.J. Cumbo racing home on the play. 1-0 STAC

Top 1st Inning: Chris Ewing singled to right-centerfield, advancing Sean Lynch to third base and scoring Joseph Scamardella. 2-0 STAC

Top 1st Inning: Gregory DiGiaro grounded out to first baseman unassisted, moving to Chris Ewing second base and plating Sean Lynch. 3-0 STAC

Btm 1st Inning: AJ Vigliotti doubled to right-centerfield, scoring Michael Kehoe. 3-1 STAC

Top 3rd Inning: Gregory DiGiaro flied out to centerfield on a sacrifice fly, advancing Chris Ewing to second base and Kyle DeCresce to third base, while Sean Lynch scored. 4-1 STAC

Top 3rd Inning: Tyler Haydt singled through the left side bringing both Chris Ewing and Kyle DeCresce around to score. 6-1 STAC

Btm 4th Inning: Bryan Birkhead walked with the bases loaded, advancing Michael Kehoe to second base, Michael Palermo to third base and Anthony Sutera to the plate. 7-2 STAC

Btm 4th Inning: AJ Vigliotti flied out to right field on a sacrifice fly, with Michael Palermo making his way home. 7-3 STAC

Btm 6th Inning: Chris Polemeni was hit by pitch with the bases full of Dolphins, moving AJ Vigliotti to second base, Bryan Birkhead to third base and scoring Michael Kehoe as an unearned run. 7-4 STAC

Btm 6th Inning: Thomas Marten doubled to left-centerfield, advancing Chris Polemeni to third base and allowing both AJ Vigliotti and Bryan Birkhead to score. 7-6 STAC

Btm 6th Inning: Vincent Weigele reached first base on a throwing error by shortstop, while also sending Thomas Marten and Chris Polemeni to the plate. 8-7 CSI

Top 9th Inning: Tyler Haydt took first base on a walk, while Chris Ewing advanced to third base on a wild pitch and Isaac Pena scored an unearned run on the wild pitch. 10-9 STAC

Top 9th Inning: David Potenza was hit by pitch with the bases full of Spartans, advancing Billy Minett to second base and Alex Celeiro to third base, while Chris Ewing made his way home. 11-9 STAC

Top 9th Inning: C.J. Cumbo flied out to centerfield on a sacrifice fly, moving David Potenza to second base and Billy Minett to third base, as Alex Celeiro scored an unearned run. 12-9 STAC

HOW IT HAPPENED - GAME TWO:

Top 4th Inning: Tyler Haydt reached first base on a fielder's choice, with Gregory DiGiaro being called out at second base via a throw from the pitcher to the second baseman, as Kyle DeCresce scored. 1-0 STAC

Btm 5th Inning: Bryan Birkhead singled to centerfield, scoring Nicholas Rodriguez as an unearned run. GAME TIED 1-1

Btm 5th Inning: Chris Polemeni flied out to right field on a sacrifice fly, moving AJ Vigliotti to second base and plating Bryan Birkhead. 2-1 CSI 

Top 7th Inning: Kyle DeCresce singled to left field, advancing Sean Lynch to third base and scoring Joseph Scamardella. GAME TIED 2-2

Top 7th Inning: Gregory DiGiaro walked with the bases loaded, moving Chris Ewing to second base and Kyle DeCresce to third base, while Sean Lynch walked to the plate. 3-2 STAC

Top 7th Inning: Tyler Haydt singled to right-center field, advancing Gregory DiGiaro to third base and scoring both Chris Ewing and Kyle DeCresce. 5-2 STAC

Top 8th Inning: Sean Lynch advanced to third base on a wild pitch while Joseph Scamardella raced home on the wild pitch. 6-2 STAC

STAC PERFORMANCES:

  • Kyle DeCresce (3-for-8), C.J. Cumbo (2-for-7) and Billy Minett (1-for-4) all smacked doubles in the doubleheader. DeCresce drove in two and scored four times and Cumbo recorded an RBI and a run scored.
  • Chris Ewing went 2-for-5 on the afternoon, with 3 RBI and three runs scored.
  • STAC also received multi-hit performances from Sean Lynch (2-for-6, 4 runs) and Tyler Haydt (2-for-8, 5 RBI).
  • Joseph Scamardella had a hit in eight chances, but scored four runs.
  • The story of the day were the 17 total walks handed out by CSI pitchers. Chris Ewing (4), C.J. Cumbo (3), Kyle DeCresce (2), Sean Lynch (2), Joseph Scamardella (2), Gregory DiGiaro (2), Tyler Haydt (1) and Billy Minett (1) all made their way to first base in the twin bill on pitches outside of the strike zone.
  • Cole Lindquist got the start for STAC in game one on Sunday and lasted 3.2 innings, allowing three runs on three hits, while walking six and striking out five. 
  • Anthony Holtje, John Dezago, Jeremiah Vega and Tom O'Neill combined to hurl 4.2 innings in relief for the Spartans, surrendering six runs (four earned) on five hits, while walking four and fanning four.
  • Kyle Rogers (W, 1-1) earned his first win of the year for throwing a solid ninth inning, allowing only a hit and a walk.
  • Andrew Schoelles took the ball in game two and pitched 5.1 innings, allowing two runs (one earned) on seven hits, while walking three and striking out three CSI hitters. Schoelles was given a no-decision due to the Spartans late inning rally.
  • Bobby LeFevre (W, 1-2) saw time out of the bullpen for the maroon and gold, pitching the final 3.2 innings. LeFevre only gave up two hits and three walks, while punching out three Staten Island batters to earn his first win of the campaign.

FACTS & FIGURES:

  • The Spartans totaled 18 runs on 13 hits, with 5 errors, while Staten Island earned 11 runs on 18 hits, with 5 errors in the twin bill.
  • STAC pitchers struck out 15 Dolphins batters, while issuing 17 walks on the day.
  • St. Thomas Aquinas stranded 19 runners on base, while CSI left 27 in the doubleheader.
