STAC Takes Four-Game Series from Lincoln, With Saturday Doubleheader Sweep, As ECC Playoffs Await

Lincoln, Pa. - The St. Thomas Aquinas College Baseball team closed out regular season play on Saturday afternoon by sweeping a second straight doubleheader from Lincoln University, 16-10 and 2-0, at the LU Baseball Complex.

STAC heads to the upcoming East Coast Conference Tournament with a 23-25 overall record and a 14-10 ECC mark, while Lincoln closes out its campaign at 11-35 and 1-23.

HOW IT HAPPENED - GAME ONE:

Top 2nd Inning - Gregory DiGiaro doubled to right-center field, scoring Brian Klumpp. 1-0 STAC

Top 2nd Inning - Nick Oelcher singled to left field, bringing Gregory DiGiaro to the plate. 2-0 STAC

Top 4th Inning - Billy Minett doubled to right-center field, as Gregory DiGiaro scored. 3-0 STAC

Btm 4th Inning - Jaden Greenidge homered to left field. 3-1 STAC

Btm 5th Inning - Jaden Greenidge singled and advanced to second base, as both Wesley Hogan and Alex Jones scored a pair of unearned runs. GAME TIED 3-3

Top 6th Inning - Billy Minett doubled to left field, as David Potenza and Gregory DiGiaro both made their way home. 5-3 STAC

Top 6th Inning - A bases loaded wild pitch sent Chris Ewing to second base, C.J. Cumbo to third base and Billy Minett to the plate. 6-3 STAC

Top 6th Inning - Joseph Scamardella reached first base on an error by the third baseman, as both Chris Ewing and C.J. Cumbo scored unearned runs. 8-3 STAC

Top 7th Inning - Nick Oelcher tripled to left-center field, plating both Billy Minett and David Potenza. 10-3 STAC

Top 7th Inning - Nick Oelcher made his way home on a passed ball, giving the Spartans an unearned run. 11-3 STAC

STAC PERFORMANCES:

  • Billy Minett went 3-for-4 on the day, with two doubles, and he also drove in three runs and scored twice in the twin bill.
  • The Spartans also saw a multi-hit days from Chris Ewing, who had two hits in seven at-bats, including a triple, with 2 RBI and three runs scored and Nick Oelcher, who also went 2-for-7 with a triple. He drove in three runs and scored twice.
  • STAC's Colin Ross (1-for-2), Gregory DiGiaro (1-for-4, 2B, RBI, 3 runs, 5 walks), Joseph Scamardella (1-for-6, 2 RBI, 3 walks), Kyle DeCresce (1-for-6), Brian Klumpp (1-for-8, RBI, run, walk) and David Potenza (1-for-8, 2B, 2 runs, walk) also added to the hit totals for the maroon and gold.
  • Andrew Schoelles got the start in game one of Saturday's doubleheader and threw six innings, allowing three runs (one earned) on six hits, while walking two and fanning three. Schoelles (4-2) earned his fourth win of the campaign in six decisions.
  • Lorent Hoti and Anthony Holtje were called upon in relief of Schoelles and combined to hurl two and a third innings, surrendering seven runs on three hits, while walking four and striking out two.
  • Kyle Rogers got the final four outs for the Spartans to garner his 10th save of the year. In an inning and a third on the mound, Rogers allowed two hits and two walks, while K'ing two Lions hitters.
  • Andrew Speranza took the hill for game two and was stellar, pitching five shutout inning, while giving up three hits, walking four and striking out eight. Speranza picked up his first win of the year and moved to 1-4.
  • Tom O'Neill locked things down for the final two innings for the maroon and gold to earn his first save of the season. O'Neill only allowed a hit, while fanning two.

FACTS & FIGURES:

  • The Spartans totaled 18 runs on 13 hits, with 2 errors, while Lincoln earned 10 runs on 15 hits, with 4 errors in the twin bill.
  • STAC pitchers struck out 17 Lions batters, while issuing 12 walks on the day.
  • St. Thomas Aquinas stranded 15 runners on base, while Lincoln left 15 in the doubleheader.
