Spartans Sweep Doubleheader with D'Youville, Salvage Series Split

Pomona, N.Y. - The St. Thomas Aquinas College Baseball team kicked off a new week of action on Monday, by wrapping up a four-game series with D'Youville University at Clover Stadium. STAC salvaged a season series split with the Saints by taking 13-4 and 4-1 decisions in the second straight doubleheader in as many days.

STAC moves to 15-19 overall and 6-5 in ECC play, while D'Youville slips to 18-17 and 7-5.

HOW IT HAPPENED - GAME ONE:

Top 1st Inning - Alec Boucher singled up the middle, advancing Jake Hollins to second base and scoring Alex Dzimian. 1-0 DYU

Btm 1st Inning - Kyle DeCresce singled to centerfield, moving Joseph Scamardella to third base, while allowing C.J. Cumbo to come to the plate. GAME TIED 1-1

Btm 3rd Inning - Kyle DeCresce homered to left-centerfield, also scoring Sean Lynch. 3-1 STAC

Top 5th Inning - Alex Dzimian singled to left field, scoring Chris Neino. 3-2 STAC

Top 5th Inning - Jake Hollins singled to right-centerfield, while Alex Dzimian made his way home. GAME TIED 3-3

Top 5th Inning - Jon Simpson walked with the bases loaded, advancing Alec Boucher to second base, Jeremy Glinski advanced to third base and Billy Morris to the plate. 4-3 DYU

Btm 7th Inning - Billy Minett doubled to right-centerfield, as both Gregory DiGiaro and Chris Ewing both scored. 5-4 STAC

Btm 7th Inning - Nick Oelcher singled up the middle, with Billy Minett making his way home. 6-4 STAC

Btm 7th Inning - Joseph Scamardella homered to right-centerfield, also scoring C.J. Cumbo and Nick Oelcher. 9-4 STAC

Btm 7th Inning - Sean Lynch doubled to right field and advanced to third base on a throwing error by right fielder and then scored an unearned run. 10-4 STAC

Btm 8th Inning - Nick Oelcher singled to centerfield and advanced to second base on the throw, as Billy Minett advanced to third base and Gregory DiGiaro scored. 11-4 STAC

Btm 8th Inning - C.J. Cumbo singled through the left side, scoring both Nick Oelcher and Billy Minett. 13-4 STAC

HOW IT HAPPENED - GAME TWO:

Btm 6th Inning - Kyle DeCresce singled to centerfield, with Sean Lynch advancing to second base and Joseph Scamardella making his way to the plate. 1-0 STAC

Btm 6th Inning - Chris Ewing singled to left field, scoring both Isaac Pena and Sean Lynch. 3-0 STAC

Btm 6th Inning - Gregory DiGiaro singled to centerfield, allowing Chris Ewing to make his way home. 4-0 STAC

Top 7th Inning - Hunter Nowak grounded out to third base, scoring Jeremy Glinski. 4-1 STAC

STAC PERFORMANCES:

  • Nick Oelcher smacked five hits in eight at-bats. He also drove in two runs and scored another two. 
  • Kyle DeCresce and Joseph Scamardella each went 4-for-8 with a home run in the doubleheader, with DeCresce recording 4 RBI and a run scored, while Scamardella drove in three runs and scored twice.
  • The Spartans also saw multi-hit days from Gregory DiGiaro (2-for-5, 2B, RBI, 2 Runs, 2 Walks), Sean Lynch (2-for-7, 2B, 3 Runs, Walk) and C.J. Cumbo (2-for-8, 2B, 2 RBI, 2 Runs).
  • Cole Lindquist got the start in game one of the Monday twin bill and threw 4.1 innings, allowing four runs on five hits, while walking six and fanning four. Lindquist was charged with a no-decision.
  • Bobby LeFevre was summoned from the bullpen for the final 4.2 innings and was stellar for the Spartans, giving up only a walk and mowing down seven Saints hitters. LeFevre earned his second win of the season and moves to 2-2.
  • Andrew Schoelles took the mound for game two and hurled a complete game for the maroon and gold, allowing one run on five hits, with no walks and three strikeouts. Schoelles goes to 3-2 on the year with the impressive outing.

FACTS & FIGURES:

  • The Spartans totaled 17 runs on 21 hits, with no errors, while D'Youville earned 5 runs on 10 hits, with 2 errors in the twin bill.
  • STAC pitchers struck out 14 Saints batters, while issuing 7 walks on the day.
  • St. Thomas Aquinas stranded 16 runners on base, while DYU left 11 in the doubleheader.
