STAC Drops Doubleheader to So. New Hampshire, 13-10 & 12-7

Salem, Mass. - The St. Thomas Aquinas College Baseball team dropped its Sunday non-conference doubleheader with Southern New Hampshire University, 13-10 and 12-7, to close a four-game weekend series with the Penmen at Salem State University.

STAC slips back to the .500 mark at 6-6, while SNHU improves to 9-7, while also taking three of four contests from the Spartans.

HOW IT HAPPENED - GAME ONE: 

Top 1st Inning - Gregory DiGiaro reached first base on a throwing error by the shortstop, with C.J. Cumbo scoring on the error. 1-0 STAC

Top 1st Inning - Chris Ewing doubled to right field, with Nick Oelcher and Gregory DiGiaro both crossing the plate with unearned runs. 3-0 STAC

Top 1st Inning - David Potenza drew a walk with the bases loaded with Billy Minett advancing to second base; Michael Zeis advancing to third base and Chris Ewing scoring an unearned run. 4-0 STAC

Top 1st Inning - C.J. Cumbo singled to left field, advancing to second base on a throwing error by the left fielder. Meanwhile, David Potenza advanced to third base and both Billy Minett and Michael Zeis scored unearned runs. 6-0 STAC

Btm 1st Inning - Jake Risedorf drew a walk with the bases loaded with Jake Pisano advancing to second base, Kyle Lavigne advancing to third base and Dyrenson Wouters scoring. 6-1 STAC

Btm 1st Inning - Jorge Burgos singled to left field advancing Jake Risedorf to second base, but then gets thrown out at third base by a relay play from the left fielder to the third baseman. Jake Pisano and Kyle Lavigne both score on the play. 6-3 STAC

Top 1st Inning - Joseph Scamardella advanced to third base on a wild pitch with C.J. Cumbo scoring on a wild pitch. 1-0 STAC

Top 1st Inning - Sean Lynch singled to center field, advancing Gregory DiGiaro to second base and plating Joseph Scamardella. 2-0 STAC

Top 1st Inning - Chris Ewing reached on a fielder's choice to the shortstop, with Michael Zeis being out at second base via a throw from the shortstop to the second baseman. Gregory DiGiaro scored on the play. 3-0 STAC

STAC PERFORMANCES:

  • Sean Lynch went 5-for-7 on the day, with a home run, 2 RBI and two runs scored.
  • Chris Ewing had four hits in seven at-bats, with two doubles, 4 RBI and three runs scored. 
  • Gregory DiGiaro smacked two home runs in a 3-for-6 afternoon, with 2 RBI and four runs scored. He was also walked twice.
  • Andrew Schoelles returned to the mound for STAC in game one on Sunday and threw only one inning, allowing five runs on two hits, while four Penmen batters.
  • Jeremiah Vega, John Dezago and Cole Lindquist came out of the bullpen for the Spartans for the final five innings of the game, combining to give up eight hits and eight runs, while walking two and fanning three. Vega was charged with the loss for allowing five runs on five hits in two innings of work.
  • Game two featured Jason Basilicata pitching 2.0 innings, while allowing four hits and six runs (four earned), while walking three and striking out one So. New Hampshire hitter. 
  • Eric Volpi, Jalen Grant, Tom O'Neill, Anthony Holtje and Robert Williams came on in relief for the final four innings, allowing four hits and six runs, while walking 10 and sending down two SNHU batters via strikeout.

FACTS & FIGURES:

  • The Spartans totaled 17 runs on 21 hits, with 5 errors, while So. New Hampshire earned 25 runs on 18 hits, with 3 errors.
  • STAC pitchers struck out 6 Penmen batters, while issuing 19 walks on the day.
  • St. Thomas Aquinas stranded 13 runners on base. Meanwhile Southern New Hampshire left 11 in the doubleheader.
