Spartans Settle for Split with So. New Hampshire, as Four-Game Series Opens

Salem, Mass. - The St. Thomas Aquinas College Baseball opened a four-game series with Southern New Hampshire University on Saturday, splitting the twin bill with the Penmen at Salem State University. SNHU took the opener 14-6, with STAC earning a 2-1 victory in game two, which was halted due to rain and completed on Sunday morning.

STAC moves to 6-4 on the season, while SNHU goes to 7-7 on the year.

HOW IT HAPPENED - GAME ONE:

Top 1st Inning - Sean Lynch doubled to left field, with C.J. Cumbo coming to the plate. 1-0 STAC

Top 1st Inning - Kyle DeCresce singled to centerfield with Sean Lynch scoring. 2-0 STAC

Btm 1st Inning - Kyle Lavigne singled to centerfield, with Harry Vargas Segura scoring. 2-1 STAC

Btm 1st Inning - Jorge Burgos singled to left field, advancing Jake Risedorf and scoring both Jake Pisano and Kyle Lavigne. 3-2 SNHU

HOW IT HAPPENED - GAME TWO:

Btm 1st Inning - Kyle Lavigne grounded into double play second base to first base. Dyrenson Wouters also put out on the play. Meanwhile, Harry Vargas Segura scored. 1-0 SNHU

Top 4th Inning - Gregory DiGiaro homered to left field. GAME TIED 1-1

Top 6th Inning - Joseph Scamardella homered to centerfield. 2-1 STAC

STAC PERFORMANCES:

  • Joseph Scamardella went 3-for-8 on the day, with two doubles, a home run, an RBI and two runs scored.
  • Gregory DiGiraro's only hit in six at-bats was a home run for the Spartans, with 2 RBI and a run scored. He also drew two walks.
  • Sean Lynch and Nick Oelcher had two hits apiece, with both being doubles. 
  • Kyle DeCresce, Michael Zeis, C.J. Cumbo and Chris Ewing also had hits in the twin bill.
  • John Archer returned to the mound for STAC in game one on Saturday and was charged with the loss, hurling four innings and allowing six runs (five earned) on 10 hits, while walking three and striking out four Penmen batters.
  • Andrew Speranza, Ryan Callaghan and Will Kindl came out of the bullpen for the Spartans for the final four innings of the game, combining to give up seven hits and eight runs (four earned), while walking five and fanning two.
  • Game two featured Andrew Alameda pitching 5.0 innings, while allowing four hits and a run, while walking one and striking out four So. New Hampshire hitters. 
  • Kyle Rogers came on in relief for the final two innings, allowing only a hit and a walk, while sending down one SNHU batter via strikeout to earn the save.

FACTS & FIGURES:

  • The Spartans totaled 8 runs on 12 hits, with 2 errors, while So. New Hampshire earned 15 runs on 22 hits, with 3 errors.
  • STAC pitchers struck out 11 Penmen batters, while issuing 10 walks on the day.
  • St. Thomas Aquinas stranded 14 runners on base. Meanwhile Southern New Hampshire left 16 in the doubleheader.
