Schoelles' Stellar Pitching Performance Propels STAC to 10-0 Shutout Victory Over Slippery Rock

Durham, N.C. - The St. Thomas Aquinas College Baseball team wrapped up its four-game North Carolina road trip on Sunday morning with a 10-0 shutout victory over Slippery Rock University at Durham Park. 

STAC improves to 5-3 overall and return to New York having won two of the four contests played in the Tar Heel State. Meanwhile, Slippery Rock drops its first game of the year and falls to 5-1.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

Top 1st Inning - Joseph Scamardella with a solo home run. 1-0 STAC

Top 6th Inning - Gregory DiGiaro with a two run homer, also scoring C.J. Cumbo. 3-0 STAC

Top 8th Inning - Sean Lynch singled with Gregory DiGiaro advancing to second base and C.J. Cumbo scoring. 4-0 STAC

Top 9th Inning - Isaac Pena reached first on an error by the third baseman, as Nick Oelcher advanced to second base, David Potenza advanced to third base and Chris Ewing came to the plate, scoring an unearned run. 5-0 STAC

Top 9th Inning - Joseph Scamardella doubled, scoring Isaac Pena, Nick Oelcher and David Potenza as unearned runs. 8-0 STAC

Top 9th Inning - Sean Lynch doubled, advancing Gregory DiGiaro to third base, while scoring Joseph Scamardella. 9-0 STAC

Top 9th Inning - Chris Ewing walked with the bases loaded with Billy Minett advancing to second base; Sean Lynch advancing to third base and Gregory DiGiaro scoring. 10-0 STAC

STAC PERFORMANCES:

  • Joseph Scamardella went 2-for-4 on the day, with a double, a home run, 4 RBI and two runs scored.
  • Gregory DiGiaro had two hits in three at-bats for the Spartans, including a double and a home run, while driving in two runs and scoring two others. He was also walked twice.
  • Sean Lynch went 2-for-4 with a double and 2 RBI, while C.J. Cumbo also stroked two hits and scored two runs.
  • Chris Ewing (1-for-3) had the other base knock for the maroon and gold, while also picking up an RBI and a run scored. He was also walked twice.
  • Andrew Schoelles got the ball for STAC on Sunday and hurled a gem. Schoelles pitched a complete game shutout, while allowing only four hits and two walks to pick up his second win of the season. He also struck out five Slippery Rock batters.

FACTS & FIGURES:

  • The Spartans posted 10 runs on 9 hits, with no errors, while Slippery Rock earned no runs on four hits, with one error.
  • STAC pitchers struck out five Slippery Rock batters, while issuing 2 walks on the day.

St. Thomas Aquinas College heads to New England for a four-game weekend series with Southern New Hampshire University on Saturday, March 9 and Sunday, March 10. All games in the series will be played at Salem State University in Salem, Massachusetts.
