STAC Baseball Holds Off Southern Connecticut, 10-8

Myrtle Beach, S.C. - The St. Thomas Aquinas College Baseball team wrapped up its three-day, four-game North Carolina road trip by holding off a late inning rally by Southern Connecticut State University to take a 10-8 victory over the Owls at the Ripken Experience.

STAC improves to 3-1 on the year, while So. Connecticut State drops to 6-2, snapping a four-game win streak.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

Top 1st Inning - Jake Chacho singled to third base, advancing Izaiah Walker advancing to second base and Devin Pelletier to third base, while scoring Jack Drewry. 1-0 SCSU

Top 3rd Inning - Jake Chacho tripled down the right field line with Izaiah Walker and Devin Pelletier both scoring. 3-0 SCSU

Top 3rd Inning - Jake Gruttadauria doubled to left-centerfield, scoring Jake Chacho. 4-0 SCSU

Btm 3rd Inning - Sean Lynch walked, with Gregory DiGiaro advancing to second base, Chris Ewing advancing to third base and David Potenza scoring. 4-1 SCSU

Btm 3rd Inning - Kyle DeCresce singled to left-centerfield, with Sean Lynch advancing to second base and both Gregory DiGiaro and Chris Ewing scoring. 4-3 SCSU

Btm 3rd Inning - Nick Oelcher singled to left-centerfield and advanced to second base on the throw, while Kyle DeCresce advanced to third base and Sean Lynch scored. Game tied 4-4

Top 6th Inning - Josh Wetteman flied out to right field on a sacrifice fly, with Derrick Jagello advancing to third base and Jake Gruttadauria scoring. 8-5 STAC

Top 6th Inning - Mike Talavera grounded out to the shortstop, with Derrick Jagello scoring. 8-6 STAC

Btm 6th Inning - David Potenza singled through the left side, scoring Joseph Scamardella 9-6 STAC

Top 7th Inning - Derrick Jagello doubled to left field, with Jake Gruttadauria advancing to third base and then thrown out at home plate via a throw from the left fielder to the shortstop to the catcher. Izaiah Walker scored on the double. 9-7 STAC

Btm 7th Inning - Gregory DiGiaro homered to center field. 10-7 STAC

Top 8th Inning - Tyshaun Diaz singled to left-centerfield, with Jack Drewry advancing to second base and Chad Fedeli scoring. 10-8 STAC

STAC PERFORMANCES:

  • Gregory DiGiaro went 1-for-3, with a homerun, an RBI and two runs scored on the afternoon.
  • Joseph Scamardella hit a double, while going 3-for-4 for the Spartans and scoring two runs.
  • Billy Minett (1-for-4) smacked a 2 RBI double in the game.
  • STAC also received hits from David Potenza (1-for-4, RBI, Run, Walk), Chris Ewing (1-for-5, Run), Kyle DeCresce (1-for-3, 2 RBI, Run, Walk), Nick Oelcher (1-for-4, RBI, Run), C.J. Cumbo (1-for-2, 2 RBI, Run, Walk)
  • Andrew Schoelles got the start for STAC on Sunday and picked up his first collegiate win (1-0), hurling five innings and allowing four runs on seven hits, while walking two and striking out three Owls batters.
  • Relievers Jason Basilicata, Cole Lindquist and John Dezago were each tasked with keeping Southern Connecticut off of the scoreboard, and the trio combined to allow six hits and four runs over 2.2 innings, while walking four and K'ing four. 
  • Kyle Rogers closed things out for the maroon and gold, getting his first collegiate save of the year, for throwing 1.1 scoreless innings, while also not allowing a hit, walking one and fanning two.

FACTS & FIGURES:

  • The Spartans posted 10 runs on 10 hits, with no errors, while Southern Connecticut earned 8 runs on 13 hits, with one error.
  • STAC pitchers struck out 9 Owls batters, while issuing 7 walks on the day.
  • St. Thomas Aquinas stranded 4 runners on base. Meanwhile So. Connecticut left 10 in the contest.

STAC heads back out on the road for a four-game trip to North Carolina. The Spartans will face Wilmington University (Del.) in a doubleheader on Friday, March 1 in Durham, before heading to the USA Baseball National Training Complex in Cary to take on Mansfield (March 2) and Slippery Rock (March 3).
