St. Thomas Aquinas College Baseball Pitcher John Archer was named the East Coast Conference Pitcher of the Week on Monday, following the Spartans four-game season-opening road trip to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, where the maroon and gold went 3-1 against Northeast-10 Conference opponents.
Archer (Dobbs Ferry, N.Y.) had a sensational season debut for the Spartans as the right-handed pitcher tossed seven shutout innings while only allowing five hits and striking out a career-high nine batters in an 11-2 win over Franklin Pierce, who received votes in the NCBWA National Poll and was ranked No. 3 in the most recent NCBWA East Region Poll.
STAC (3-1) heads back out on the road for a four-game trip to North Carolina. The Spartans will face Wilmington University (Del.) in a doubleheader on Friday, March 1 in Durham, before heading to the USA Baseball National Training Complex in Cary to take on Mansfield (March 2) and Slippery Rock (March 3).
