Spartans Suffers Doubleheader Sweep Against Southern New Hampshire

Cary, N.C. - The St. Thomas Aquinas College Baseball team returned to Cary, North Carolina on Friday for their second straight weekend of action at the USA Baseball National Training Complex. In doubleheader action, the Spartans suffered a sweep at the hands of Southern New Hampshire University by the scores of 8-2 and 5-2.

STAC moves to 2-8 on the season, while SNHU improves to 6-2.

HOW IT HAPPENED (GAME ONE): 

Bottom 1st Inning - Kyle DeCresce singled, RBI; Tyler Haydt advanced to second base; C.J. Cumbo scored. (1-0 STAC)

Bottom 1st Inning - Michael Zeis singled to center field, RBI; Kyle DeCresce advanced to second base, out at third base; center field to first base to third base; Tyler Haydt scored. (2-0 STAC)

STAC PERFORMANCES:

  • Chris Ewing clubbed four hits in eight at-bats in the twin bill. He also scored once.
  • Michael Zeis went 2-for-6, with 3 RBI and a walk on the day.
  • The Spartans also saw hits from Kyle DeCresce (3-7, RBI), Freddy Flugger (2-6), C.J. Cumbo (1-4, Run, Walk) and Anthony Dimarco (1-3 Run).
  • Andrew Alameda got the start in game one of Friday's twin bill and threw 5.1 innings, allowing five runs (three earned) on six hits, while walking one and fanning three. Alameda took the loss and moves to 1-2 on the year.
  • Aidan Cardenas and Anthony Holtje were each summoned from the bullpen for the final 3.2 innings for the Spartans, allowing seven hits hits and three runs. They also combined to walk three Penmen hitters and struck out another four.
  • Orin Winslow took the mound for game two and gave up five runs (three earned) on four hits over 5.1 innings of work, while walking five and K-ing four. Winslow was charged with the loss and slips to 0-2 on the season.
  • Reliever Eliahs Delgado came on in the sixth inning and allowed just a walk, while picking up a strike out in two-thirds of an inning.

FACTS & FIGURES:

  • The Spartans totaled 4 runs on 13 hits, with three errors, while Southern New Hampshire earned 13 runs on 17 hits, with no errors in the twin bill.
  • STAC pitchers struck out 12 Penmen batters, while issuing 10 walks on the day.
  • St. Thomas Aquinas stranded 9 runners on base, while Southern New Hampshire left 15 in the doubleheader.
