Molloy Scores Early and Often in 22-3 Game One Victory Over STAC; Game Two Suspended Deadlocked 4-4

Pomona, N.Y. - The St. Thomas Aquinas College Baseball team saw their opponents, Molloy University, put on a hitting clinic on Saturday afternoon as the visitors from Long Island posted 18 hits and 22 runs in a 22-3 game one victory over the Spartans at Clover Stadium.

STAC slips to 7-21 overall and 4-6 in East Coast Conference play, while Molloy improves to 17-11 and 7-3.

Molloy's potent offense scored runs in every inning except the sixth and ninth, with STAC tallying a trio of runs in the bottom of the fourth inning via an Anthony Dimarco RBI double, scoring Ryan Hillery, and RBI ground outs by Michael Zeis and Nick Oelcher, plating Ryan Appel and Dimarco respectively.

Andrew Schoelles got the start in the opener for the Spartans and lasted just two and a third innings, surrendering nine runs (seven earned) on six hits with four walks and two strikeouts. Schoelles takes the loss and falls to 1-1 on the year.

Relievers Lorent Hoti, Jake Halloran, Trey Eckman and Robert Williams did not fare much better, as the quartet combined to allow 13 runs (11 earned) on 12 hits with 10 walks and five Ks over six and two-thirds innings.

In the second game of the ECC doubleheader, Molloy jumped out to a 4-0 first inning lead, before the maroon and gold answered with four straight runs of their own in the sixth to tie things at 4-4. Unfortunately, Mother Nature and sloppy field conditions caused the contest to be suspended in the top of the seventh inning with a runner on first base for the Lions and no one out. The remainder of the game will be played on Sunday at Mitchel Field in Uniondale, New York beginning at 12:00 p.m., with the regularly scheduled nine-inning affair between Molloy and STAC to follow soon after.

A David Potenza solo shot, an RBI single by Kyle DeCresce, scoring Ryan Hillery and a two-run single by Ryan Appell, bringing home both DeCresce and Nick Oelcher accounted for the Spartans scoring in the sixth inning.

Orin Winslow took the ball in game two and recorded a no-decision, allowing four runs on seven hits with five walks and two strikeouts over five innings. Jeremiah Vega came on in relief of Winslow in the sixth inning and allowed just two hits before the umpires and coaches decided to halt things in the interest of player safety.
