Spartan ESports Picks Up First-Ever Victory In Inaugural Season Opener

The St. Thomas Aquinas College Esports team held its first competitions on Saturday, as the program's long anticipated debut came to fruition.

In the opening event of the day, the Spartan League of Legends team took on Daemen College in the CSL Preseason. STAC was able to hang tough in the first match between the two squads, before eventually falling short. In the second game, the Daemen adjustments proved to be too much for the Spartans to overcome, as they ended up dropping the second game, thus ending the best of three series in defeat.

Next up, St. Thomas Aquinas had three seperate best of three Fortnite matches take place. The duo of Alex Ordonez and Kian Bachinsky earned themselves a victory, taking the first two games of their match against SUNY Canton to earn the first win in program history. The team of St. Jacob Diodonet and Elias Guardado also took on a pairing from SUNY Canton, but saw their late and furious rally fall just short. To close out the day of competition, Kyle Reinhardt and Carlton Thomas fell behind early to Rochester Institute of Technology, and despite playing almost even in the second game, dropped their opening week match as well.

The Spartan Esports team is back in action next Saturday, October 20th with a full slate of matches against opponents including; SUNY Canton, Rochester Institute of Technology, Stony Brook and Queens University.
