Spartan Esports Battles Tough Competition En Route to Another Successful Weekend

The Spartan Esports team had more than a full slate of action on Saturday, with one League of Legends match, 2 regular season Fortnite matches, and took part in 3 Fortnite Qualifying Tournament matches before losing in the Round of 32.

In their League of Legends match against University of Colorado - Colorado Springs, the Spartans were hurt by a slow start in their first game, as a late defensive rally couldn't hold as their Nexus fell. In the second match, the Spartans were able to play even with UCCS for the majority of the match before the Mountain Lions made a team lane push and were able to get through the Spartan defenses and take the game and the match by a score of 2-0. There were more reasons for optimism after this one, as the Spartans were playing without their main jungler.

In Fortnite action, the Spartans split their two matches on the day. The duo of Kian Bachinsky and Alex Ordonez continued their sterling season, maintaining their undefeated record with a 2-0 victory over Stony Brook. Bachinsky and Ordonez are currently 4-0 in regular season play. The other duo in action, CJ Thomas and Kyle Reinhardt, fell in their regular season matchup against Cornell University by a score of 2-0.

Despite their loss in regular season play, CJ and Kyle also took part in the Fortnite Championship Qualifier Tournament. In this tournament, the duo took down the University of Victoria (CAN) and the University of Arizona to make it to the round of 32, where they would face off against Grand Canyon University. The Spartans were able to take the first game in the best of three series 10-5 before losing the next two rounds in tight fashion, 6-4 and 10-8. Even though their record in regular season play is 1-3, they have been successful in tournament play sporting a 5-2 mark.

The Spartans will be back in action next weekend with a match against the University of Florida Gators in League of Legends, while both Fortnite duos will be taking on teams from the Rochester Institute of Technology. All matches are scheduled for 3pm. Follow the team on twitter @STACesports for up to date streaming information.
