Thorne Penalty Stroke Goal Not Enough As Field Hockey Falls At Molloy, 2-1

The St. Thomas Aquinas College Field Hockey team dropped a 2-1 road decision to Molloy College on Saturday afternoon.

In first half action, Molloy held a 9-5 shots advantage over the STAC, but neither team was able to light the lamp, keeping it scoreless at the break.

However, that was not the case to start the final stanza, as the home team Lions were able to quickly get themselves on the board. Zoe Norton tallied her team-leading fifteenth goal of the season on a pass from Nadia Elcock just thirty seven seconds in. Later in the match, Briannah Thorne was awarded a penalty stroke by the officials and subsequently converted on the try, tying the game a one goal apiece and picking up her team-leading eighth of the campaign. Unfortunately, the game remained knotted up for only about two minutes, as Molloy scored the game winnner when Nadia Elcock picked up her tenth of the year, on a pass by teammate Jessica Kleber. The Lions defense and goaltending held serve to close out the game, picking up a 2-1 victory.

Spartan keeper Suzanne Clarke made 4 saves on the afternoon, while Tara Byrnes picked up 6 saves in net for Molloy.

The Lions held a slight 13-12 shots advantage, and STAC an 8-2 edge on penalty corners.

St. Thomas Aquinas College heads to Garden City, NY on Tuesday, October 23 for their final road match of the regular season with the Adelphi University Panthers, beginning at 4pm.
