Gutenberger's Second Half Tally Propels STAC over Bellarmine, 2-1

The St. Thomas Aquinas College field hockey team snapped a four-game losing streak on Saturday with a 2-1 victory over Bellarmine University at Spartan Field.

In the first half, Bellarmine got the scoring started just over six minutes in, as Jillian Fazio was able to solve Spartan keeper Kaitlyn Gee on a deflection of fellow teammate Merrit Harris' shot on goal, giving the Knights a 1-0 lead. Later in the frame, STAC forward Jade Hall knotted the game at a goal apiece on her first of the season, beating Breanna McWhorter with just under twelve minutes left, which concluded the scoring between the teams in the opening period.

The second half saw largely back and forth play, with both squads receiving their share of shots and penalty corners. However, it was the Spartans who would light the lamp early in the final stanza, when Kaitlyn Gutenberger deposited a backhanded shot behind McWhorter just over three minutes in, to give STAC a 2-1 advantage. Suzanne Clarke, who entered the game in relief of the starter Gee, turned aside a number of grade A scoring chances in the cage for the Spartans to help give STAC a sorely needed victory.

Spartan keepers Kaitlyn Gee and Suzanne Clarke split time in the cage with Gee registering no saves and Clarke picking up four.

Bellarmine had a 14-13 shots advantage and a 11-7 edge on penalty corners.

St. Thomas Aquinas embarks on a 2-game road trip with stops at Molloy College, next Saturday, October 20 (1pm), and Adelphi University on Tuesday, October 23 (4pm).
