Early Scoring Pushes Bentley Past STAC, 2-0

Waltham, Mass. – The St. Thomas Aquinas College Women's Field Hockey team dropped a 2-0 result to Bentley University Saturday afternoon at Bentley Field in Waltham.

While the teams battled for field position for most of the match, the Falcons used a bout of early scoring to earn the victory over the Spartans.

In first quarter action, Katie Thies tallied the first goal of the day for Bentley almost 12 minutes into the stanza, as an Ava Bevilacqua shot was saved by STAC keeper Jessie Hohenstein, but Thies was able to gather the subsequent rebound and fire it home to make it 1-0. STAC would register one shot to Bentley's eight for the quarter.

Emma Halas would then double the Falcons lead with just over seven minutes to go in the second quarter on a backhander that would slip past Jessie Hohenstein, making it 2-0. Hala's shot would be one of four for Bentley in the quarter, giving the home squad a 12-1 shots advantage at the half.

St. Thomas Aquinas would come out of the break with a renewed sense of urgency and push the pace play, registering a pair of shots and picking up two penalty corners in the quarter. Neither team could capitalize on chances earned and the score remained 2-0 Bentley through 45 minutes of play.

The fourth quarter saw Bentley try to increase their two-goal lead, as the home squad posted six shots, with two being saved by goalie Hohenstein, two blocked by Spartan defenders and two going wide of the net. The Falcons were also beneficieries of eight penalty corners in the stanza, but could not capitalize on their opportunities. However, as was the case for most of the match, fouls and possession changes hampered STAC's opportunities to put together a sustained rally, and Bentley went on to pick up the shutout win.
