West Haven, Conn. – The St. Thomas Aquinas College Women's Field Hockey team came out on the losing side of a clash with the University of New Haven on Tuesday evening at Ralph F. DellaCamera Stadium, falling 2-1 to the Chargers.
A pair of New Haven goals in the fourth quarter helped the visitors power past the Spartans, snapping STAC's two-game winning streak.
The game was filled with back-and-forth action between the two sides, as it took just a minute and four seconds of play for the first shot to be taken. Sofia Corominas Cuen would take a penalty corner pass from teammate Hailey Galison and fire it past Chargers goalie Keira Integlia to make it 1-0 St. Thomas Aquinas. For Corominas Cuen, the goal would be her first career collegiate tally.
Once Corominas Cuen cracked the seal, the teams would remain off of the scoreboard until early in the fourth quarter. However, New Haven would amass a 16-4 shots advantage between the Spartans goal and their first of the night.
In the 49th minute, New Haven's Audrey Larson would tap home a Sophie Schreck shot, that was orginally saved by STAC goalie Jessie Hohenstein, to tie the match at one goal apiece. Just four minutes later, Morgan McCarty would put the Chargers ahead on another saved Sophie Schreck shot, which could not be controlled by Hohenstein and was subsequently put home by McCarty to take the 2-1 advantage.
STAC would have a few chances to tie things up in the final minutes of action, including two penalty corners and a shot by Lauren Cooper that was blocked by the Charger defense, but was unable to string anything together before the clock wound down to all zeros.
