STAC Field Hockey Suffers Tough 1-0 Setback to Adelphi

Sparkill, N.Y. – The St. Thomas Aquinas College Women's Field Hockey team fell, 1-0, to Adelphi University on Wednesday afternoon at Spartan Field in Sparkill. The Spartans fell to 5-9 overall and 4-6 in the NE10, while the Panthers improved to 9-4 on the year and 7-3 in conference play.

The teams initially battled through 15 minutes of scoreless hockey, with Adelphi posting a 3-0 shots advantage. Goalkeeper Jessie Hohenstein had to make only one stop in the frame, with two other shots going wide of the net.

Adelphi would get on the scoreboard early in the second quarter, as Amanda Lee would lift the ball over a defender's stick and toward the cage, with Giana McKeough deflecting it past Hohenstein to make it 1-0 in the 20th minute. For McKeough, the goal would be her 10th tally of the season. The Panthers would register nine additional shots in the stanza, to hold a commanding 12-0 mark. However, the contest would remain a slim one-goal advantage for the visitors at the half.

STAC came out for the third quarter with a lot of energy, as the Spartans would fire five shots toward the Adelphi net and be awarded four penalty corners for their efforts in the offensive zone. Neither side would be able to muster a goal, so the Panthers would retain a 1-0 lead going into the final quarter of play.

In the fourth quarter, Adelphi would adjust their game plan to play a smothering defensive scheme. As a result, STAC was unable to sustain large amounts of time and space in the Panthers end and the game would largely be played in the middle of the field until the clock ran out, giving the visitors the shutout victory.
