Spartans' Win Streak Snapped in 3-1 Setback at Adelphi

Garden City, N.Y. - The St. Thomas Aquinas College Field Hockey team saw its five-game win streak end at the hands of Adelphi University, in a 3-1 setback at Motamed Field on Wednesday afternoon.

Freshman Kelly Johnson scored the lone goal for the Spartans, while Jessie Hohenstein (L, 7-5) made four stops on seven shots faced.

How it Happened

  • Kelly Johnson opened the scoring just over a minute into the action, as STAC would capitalize on a Panthers turnover, with Johnson dancing her way through several defenders and ripping a backhand attempt past keeper Mirthe Karstens to make it 1-0 in favor of the visitors.
  • Adelphi would tie things with under five minutes left before halftime. Amanda Lee received a feed from teammate Jocelyn Hild off of a restart on a foul call. Lee beat a STAC defender, then netminder Jessie Hohenstein with chip shot into the cage to knot the score at 1-1.
  • At the break, St. Thomas Aquinas outshot Adelphi 9-3 and earned a slim 4-3 advantage in penalty corners.
  • When the teams returned from the intermission, neither side would tally a third quarter goal, as the Spartans held a 6-1 margin in shots.
  • The host Panthers would strike quickly for a goal to start the final quarter of play. A penalty corner entry by Bianca Bachisin found the stick of Emiline Biggin for a one-timer past Hohenstein to make it 2-1.
  • Adelphi's insurance goal would come with just over three minutes to play, as a Bianca Bachisin penalty corner insert was sent to teammate Kylie Pergoy. Peregoy's shot attempt was deflected by Bachisin over the head of Hohenstein and to the back of the cage to extend the Panthers lead to 3-1.

  • Johnson took a team-high nine shots in the match, with five attempts going on goal.
