STAC Field Hockey Scores Thrilling 4-3 Double OT Victory Over Southern New Hampshire

Manchester, N.H. - Jasmijn Van Drunen's double overtime game-winning goal propelled the St. Thomas Aquinas College Field Hockey team past Southern New Hampshire University, 4-3 on Saturday afternoon at Larkin Field.

STAC moves to 9-7 overall and 7-4 in the NE10, while SNHU slips to 6-10 and 5-6.

Floortje Beune, Sam Van Der Valk and Nicola Van Vuuren each picked up a goal in regulation, as goalie Jessie Hohenstein (W, 8-5) stopped four of seven shots faced in the contest.

How it Happened

  • The visiting Spartans struck for two first quarter goals, as first Floortje Beune took a pass from Sofia Corominas Cuen and deposited it to the back of the cage, past Penmen keeper Nichole Roberts, for her third of the season, to make it 1-0 in the seventh minute.
  • In the 12th minute, Sam Van Der Valk doubled the STAC lead at 2-0 on a feed by teammate Adriana Alfisi, for her second goal of the year.
  • The match would go to halftime with the St. Thomas Aquinas ahead on on the scoreboard, 2-0, but Southern New Hampshire would come out of the break, striking back with a pair of Anne Wiersma goals just 2:19 apart early in the third quarter, with helpers from two helpers from Annemartine Christis and one from Brianna Frisbee, which came off a penalty corner insert.
  • Frisbee would give the SNHU their first lead of the afternoon in the second minute final frame off a feed from Christis to make it 3-2.
  • St. Thomas Aquinas would battle for every inch of time and space in the hopes of tying up the the game, and would do just that with under three minutes left to play in regulation. A turnover by the Penmen resulted in a Jasmijn Van Drunen backhand shot toward the net that was tipped past keeper Emma Peeters by Nicola Van Vuuren to even the score at 3-3.
  • No further scoring took place in the fourth quarter, forcing bonus hockey.
  • In the first overtime session, STAC would get three chances to end things, as Van Vuuren would have two of her shots blocked and go wide of the cage, while a Hailey Galison blast would also be blocked by the SNHU defense. The game would remain tied through 70 minutes of play.
  • The game-winner came in double overtime in the 76th minute, as off of a Southern New Hampshire turnover, Nicola Van Vuuren would find Jasmijn Van Drunen with a pass that the Bilthoven, Netherlands native fired low, past a sprawling Peeters to clinch the match, 4-3.
