Sparkill, N.Y. - The St. Thomas Aquinas College Field Hockey team earned its second consecutive shutout victory on Friday afternoon, taking down Lindenwood University, 2-0 at Spartan Field.
The Spartans were led by goals from Olivia Cerbo and Nicola Van Vuuren in the contest, with Jessie Hohenstein securing the shutout in goal.
STAC controlled much of the play, although the visiting Lions out shot the Spartans by 8-7 margin. St. Thomas Aquinas earned an 8-3 advantage in penalty corners. Hohenstein made five saves in earning the shutout.
The hosts struck first, midway through the second quarter. Following a Kelly Johnson shot through traffic. Olivia Cerbo corralled the ball and fired it home for a 1-0 lead.
STAC's second goal came late in the fourth quarter with the Lindenwood cage empty, as the Lions pulled keeper Kyla Cook for an extra attacker. Jasmijn Van Drunen sent a pass up the middle, finding teammate Nicola Van Vuuren, who tapped the ball into the back of the net to double the maroon and gold advantage at 2-0.
The Spartans defense stifled any comeback hopes for Lindenwood, as the home side did not allow a late push on their goal.
